    UNL student
wins national
photo contest
By Malt Herek
Senior Editor
“Butch” Ireland, a University of
Ncbraska-Lincoln senior and winner
of the William Randolph Hcarst na
tional photojournalism contest, said
he is dissatisfied with his work.
Ireland, who won the award in
May, said he learns more about pho
tography all the time and even though
his work has been nationally recog
nized, he still thinks he needs to
improve.
Being a photographer takes some
amount of luck, Ireland said, but he
said he would eventually like to learn
to rely more on his skills and not on
chance.
Being a photographer for a news
paper, he said, requires that the pic
tures have a sense of believability in
them. Ireland said he feels he hasn’t
attained that believability yet.
But, he said, sometimes photos
lose their believability because they
are too perfect.
If someone went to the exact same
spot in Yosemite National Park that
Ansel Adams photographed, Ireland
said, that person probably wouldn’t
see things the same way Adams saw
them.
“I want to get away from pictures
that look too pleasing to the eye,” he
said.
Ireland said his favorite work is to
taking portraits and shooting picture
stories.
Picture stories arc different be
cause they aren’t just one shoot, Ire
land said. With picture stories, pho
tographers get to know subjects bet
ter than when they arc shooting for
just one day, he said.
Ireland spent two days taking pic
tures in San Francisco for the Hearst
competition. When he found out he
was one of the three finalists chosen
for the shoot-off, he said, he wanted
to win but didn’t think he would. So,
he just wanted to go and have fun, he
said.
When the his name was announced
as the winner, he said, he felt numb
and couldn’t believe it.
After he graduates from UNL this
December, Ireland said he will test
the waters and find out where he can
gel a job in the competitive field of
photojournalism.
He said winning the contest might
cause potential employers to look twice
at his resume.
