UNL rec center offers students free activities By Todd Cooper Staff Reporter For first-time students at the Uni versity of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, the Lee and Helene Sapp Recreation Facility, which opened last fall, is a welcome hand to a host of healthy opportunities. The recreation center offers full time UNL students a variety of free activities, including weightlifting, racquctball, swimming, basketball, volleyball, squash and jogging. “There are certain advantages to the building,” said Kcnda Scheclc, assistant director and coordinator of intramurals at the center. “It pro motes a healthy lifestyle, and it’s a great way to meet a lot of new people. “We’ve had very positive responses from the students. There’s been a marked increase in the use of the building.” Use of the building has increased not only because of the wide range of offerings, but also because of its ac cessibility, according to Schecle. “It offers many of the same pro grams (of other gyms), and it's con veniently located on campus,” Scheclc said. When work is completed on the reconstruction of the NU Coliseum, the diversity of the programs at cam pus recreation should be even greater, according to Schecle. Work on the Coliseum will begin sometime this fall. Part of that remodeling of the Coliseum includes the improvement of the men’s and women’s locker rooms with a sauna added to each locker room, the re-laying the gym floor and the addition of a martial arts area in the basement. Students also have access to Cook Pavilion, the indoor practice field, whenever Nebraska athletic teams are not using it. bootball ticket forms available Except for football and men’s basketball, attending regular season games of sporting events at the Uni versity of Ncbraska-Lincoln is free lor students who show their UNL student ID cards.
