Rap
Continued from Page 9
“They wanted to sing, and we
wanted to rap. And it’s not fair for
them to be stuck in a rap group be
cause they ’ re good singers. So we just
divided into two groups.”
Kauffman, the rapper of II Def,
said he can’t write about the same
topics that national rap acts do.
“I can’t write songs about gangs
and how I’m walking the streets stay
ing away from gangs and drugs be
cause I haven’t been there,” he said.
Kauffman said he tries to be posi
tive and write about things he has
experienced. He said lots of groups in
Lincoln arc jealous of other groups,
and they try to keep the others from
getting ahead.
‘‘I do more stuff on the unity type
thing, and basically people trying to
hold us down and how we’re trying to
make it. The attitude in Lincoln is
there’s a lot of jealousy,” he said.
Kauffman said you have to know
how to play with the audience to be
good in rap.
‘‘Rap is really a crowd-oriented
thing. There’s a great message you
can get across with it but it’s all
entertainment. If you can’t perform
live in rap, you’re not going to make
it,” Kauffman said.
The farewell for Paul Miles is from
9 p.m. to 1 a.m. tonight in the Ne
braska Union Ballroom. Tickets are
$4 if dressed for the beach and $5 if
not.

Ballet troupe presents ‘Cinderella9
By Julie Naughton
Senior Reporter _
The Opera Ballet de Lyon will
make their Nebraska debut with their
presentation of “Cendrillon” (“Cin
derella”), Saturday at the Lied Cen
ter for Performing Arts.
The Lyon, France-based ballet
troupe’s version of the classic “Cin
derella” story is non-traditional,
according to Karen Hart Underwood
of the Lied Center.
The non-singing ballet company,
associated with the Lyon Opera, is on
a month-long tour of the United States,
coming to the Lied Center from Phila
delphia.
Underwood said differences be
tween the Opera Ballet dc Lyon and
other companies, such as the Jeffrey,
will be apparent in their non-tradi
tional dancing. Dancers move in a
doll-like, stiff fashion, she said.
The story differs from the tradi
tional “Cinderella” story as well,
Underwood said. Although Ameri
cans know one version, the Grimm
brothers’ fairy tale, other cultures have
their own versions of the story.
“It’s interesting to see how differ
ently one story can be interpreted,”
Underwood said. “Take ‘Cinderella.’
There is the Walt Disney version, the
Grimm Brothers’ version and ‘My
Fair Lady,’ and they’re all just one
story that has been interpreted differ
ently.”
The dancers wear costumes and
masks to make them look like dolls,
and the set of the ballet is a large doll
house. Music is irom me rroKouev
score of “Cinderella.”
According to Underwood, chore
ographer Maguy Marin did not want
her version of “Cinderella” to be
like anyone else’s.
The Opera Ballet de Lyon’s hired
Marin in 1985 to choreograph an origi
nal production of “Cinderella.” Marin
created her version of the ballet by
researching the “Cinderella” story
and blending many differcntcullures’
versions together, as well as relying
on herown memories of bcingachild.
Since the ballet’s creation, it has
been performed more than 100 times.
The ballet’s performances arc at 2
and 8 p.m. Saturday. Ticket prices arc
$20, $16 and $12, half price for UNL
students and youth under 18. Tickets
arc available at the Lied Center box
office between 11 a.m.and 5:30p.m.
