Varied influences and talents surface in Preston Smith’s wide-ranging debut By John Payne Senior Reporter Preston Smith “Preston Smith” Curb Rookie vocalist Preston Smith makes a flawed, yet ultimately re spectable showing with his recently released debut on Curb Records. Al though marred by some of the pop pier stuff on the album, Smith has proven that he has a knack for putting together catchy tunes. And Smith must be given credit for taking on the writing and produc tion responsibilities his first time out. Having recently opened for such bands as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smith’s musical influences seem to be as varied as the instruments he uses on this LP. R&B tracks like “Mostly I Just Want to Be Loved’ ’ and ‘ ‘Suzy Wong’ ’ are reminiscent of early Elvis Cos tello, and are the best work turned in by Smith. “The Ways of Sin’’ and “You Gotta Go Back’’ are two very solid reggae numbers on side one. But just when Smith has eased you into a couple of good sing-along numbers, he’ll pull the rug out from under you with Bobby Brown-ish disco dribble like “Watcha Gonna Gimme?’’ Smith clearly is a talented song writer and musician, but he may have tried to do a little too much his first time out. He has tried to cover all the bases, and the result is an often choppy album. Lounge jazz, like the piano-laden “Dying Embers,” just seems out of place here, its only purpose appar ently to give Smith’s sound more diversity. This is unnecessary, as arc some of the gimmicky arrangements found on side two’s “Where Did Our Love Go?” and “Piece of Paper.” Slide guitars and squeeze-boxes merely are throw-ins, used rather pretentiously to show off Smiths multiple talents. Preston Smith certainly hasn’t embarrassed himself here, but a more centralized effort would have made for a better album.
