    ‘Take back the night'
Officials outline anti-crime plan
By Roger Price
Staff Reporter
About 40 people on the north
steps of the State Capitol on Friday
heard several political figures out
line what they are doing to ‘‘take
back the night.”
Gary Lacey, deputy Lancaster
County attorney, said he realizes
that fathers and mothers in Lancas
ter County want prosecutors, law
enforcement and social services to
be at their peak to help reduce
violent crimes against women and
children.
Lacey said that during the 15
years he has worked at the county
attorney’s office, many things have
changed in the way such crimes are
handled.
By assigning one prosecutor to
handle a rape case from arrest to
sentencing, Lacey said, victims are
not “shuffled around,” and con
victions are more likely.
The county attorney’s office also
has begun actively prosecuting all
cases of domestic violence, he said.
Lacey said the city attorney’s
office used to handle these cases
and charged victims $50 before
they would prosecute.
“People should not be allowed
to do the gross things they do to
other people and remain free,” he
said.
Jim Baird, assistant chief of
police for special operations, said
that through community involve
ment, the Lincoln Police Depart
ment is working to make the city
safer.
If the whole community contin
ues to work together, he said, vio
lent crimes can be reduced.
Bernie Gla/.cr, counsel to the
legislature’s judiciary committee,
said it is important to ensure a safe
community so “our children can
have the childhood we remember.”
Glazcr, a candidate for Lancas
ter county attorney, said that even
if he were elected to the office, he
couldn’t do the job alone.
‘‘Your presence here today is
an important step toward ensuring
a safe community,” he said.

If court members decide they
have the power to make the change,
Gosch said, he has no doubt they
will decide in favor of his petition.
If the court determines it does
not have that power, Gosch said,
ASUN would have to amend the
constitution by petition or by a con
stitutional convention.
“It’s the right thing to do for
continuing studies and for Sandy
Haughton,’’ he said. “It may not
be the right way to do it, but I’m
willing to try.’’

Chicano Awareness Days
break attendance records
By Pat Dinslage
Staff Reporter
The success of the 20th annual
Chicano Awareness Days on Friday
through Sunday at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln may extend the
celebration to four days next year,
said Ness Sandoval, events organ
izer.
Sandoval said participation in most
events broke previous years’ atten
dance records and exceeded his ex
pectations.
Members of the Lincoln commu
nity and UNL students, faculty, staff
and administrators participated in the
panel discussions, luncheons, run and
dances, he said.
According to Frank Sanchez, presi
dent of the Mexican-Amcrican Stu
dent Association, the Friday panel
discussions and luncheon focused on
the c ul tural backgrounds of Mcx ican
American students and the need for
increased awareness and respect for
the different races and cultures in
America.
Sandoval said Saturday morning’s
9th annual Fun Run drew more than
60 runners, more than twice as many
as in 1988, when he began organizing
the event.
Saturday night’s dance, with the
Denver band Los Conquistadorcs, drew
the largest crowd - more than 400
people, up from about 230 last year,
he said.
Sanchez said the purpose of the
Awareness Days is “not only to make
people aware of the Chicano culture,
but to enjoy themselves, too.”
Sanchez, and Sandoval said the
increased attendance shows more
people at UNL and in the community
arc beginning to realize the impor
tance and significance of Chicano
Awareness Days.
