Lithuanian leaders
reject ultimatum
MOSCOW (AP) - Lithuanian lead
ers said Sunday night they would not
meet a Kremlin deadline for rescind
ing laws promoting independence
despite a threat to cut off crucial
supplies to the Baltic republic.

ter Romualdas Ozolas went on Lithu
anian television as the 48-hour dead
line by Soviet President Mikhail
Gorbachev expired to say that the
Baltic republic’s president and prime
minister would convene a meeting
Monday on Moscow’s ultimatum. &
Gorbachev sent a letter Friday to
the republic’s leaders, demanding that
they rescind indpcndcncc-orientcd
actions that he termed “anti-consti
tutional,” including laws on cancel
ing conscription into the Soviet army
and seizing Communist Party prop
erty.
