Dana Altman, Kruger’s replace
ment, is an unknown, while Eddie
Sutton, Hamilton’s probable replace
ment, is known as the man who rode
Kentucky into the ground.
Iowa State is healthy, but Johnny

Greg said that although he had
relatives in the area, family wasn’t
the only reason he came to Nebraska.
“Although my mother and dad
both went here, it was really (Ne
braska baseball) coach (John) Sand
ers that encouraged me to walk on,’’
Greg said. “I came to visit when
Nebraska beat Oklahoma in baseball,
and that scaled it for me.”
The Thorell brothers have played
sparingly this season, but both say
they help each other during the year.
Billy said having an older brother
on the team has helped him adjust
the conference, the Big Eight still is
considered top-level and the Big West
is considered a feeder league, even
though the Big West had three teams
in the NCAA tournament, including
UNLV.
A great national reputation and
praising commentary won’t help the
Big Eight in the NCAA tournament,
however. The competition in Divi
sion I and the influence of one star
player or one star coach has created a
sort of basketball gravity, making
falling easier than rising for a confer
ence.
Without an influx of talent on the
court and in the coaching box, the
great Big Eight could topple, and
Midwest basketball fans will be liv
ing in the good ol’ days and reminisc
ing about the glory days, 1980-1990.

But the benefits of having a coach
as a relative don’t help very much as
far as baseball is concerned, Greg
said.
“Just because Shane’s here doesn’t
mean I’m going to get any special fa
vors,” he said.
Billy agreed, but said that having a
cousin as a coach does bring a few
extra benefits.
“I’ve gotten to meet a lot of people
that I otherwise wouldn’t have met if
Shane wasn’t the coach,” he said. “I
can go into the coaching office and
say ‘Hey, is Shane here?’ instead of
‘Hey, is Coach Thorcll here?’”
