NU defeats Kansas State;
coach ‘overjoyed’ by win
By Paul Domeier
Senior Reporter
The Nebraska women’s tennis team
routed Kansas Slate - who edged the
Comhuskers for fourth place in the
Big Eight last year - 7-2 in the Husk
ers’ conference opener Saturday.
The Huskers followed with a 6-3
loss to Kansas on Sunday and a 9-0
win over Missouri on Monday.
Nebraska defeated the Lady Cats
in the 1988 individual dual, but Kan
sas State took fourth place by one
point over the Huskers at the Big
Eight tournament. Calvin said he was
pleased with the revenge.
“Gosh, everybody played great
tennis,’’ Calvin said. “I was over
joyed with that win.”
Nebraska took a 4-2 lead in singles
and swept the doubles without losing
more than two games in a set. Ildiko
Guba defeated nationally ranked
Marjike Nelat No. 1 singles, 7-6,6-3.
“It was the type of match (in which)
whoever won the first set would have
a big advantage,” Calvin said.
Both losses went three sets, and
Calvin said the Huskers could have
swept the dual.
Nebraska had to wait more than
two hours for the men’s dual to finish
before playing Kansas. Rachel Collins
at No. 4, Tina Coutretsis at No. 6 and
Guba and Ann Flannery at No. 2
doubles won for Nebraska. And Calvin
said the No. 1 doubles team of Collins
and Nancy Tyggum had two match
points before losing to Evelyn Hamers
and Page Goins, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
“If we could have gone 5-4, we
would have been in great shape,”
Calvin said. “Still, we’ll lake what
we got.”
Last season, the Huskers lost 6-3
to Kansas and beat Kansas State, 6-3.
“We’re a match ahead, but with
the potential to do better,” Calvin
said. He also pointed out that the
1988 duals were in Lincoln, and this
year’s matches were in Kansas.
Nebraska’s last four matches are
in Lincoln. The Huskers play Iowa
State and Colorado on Friday and
Saturday.
While neither team is as low as
Missouri, which hasn’t won a Big
Eight individual match in years, Calvin
said the Huskers should win both duals.
Tyrance

‘T do not like to go out with the guys.
I have to learn to budget my time, and
be disciplined.”
Tyrance is so disciplined during
football season that he has recorded a
perfect 4.0 GPA during his previous
two fall semesters. That discipline
will be needed on April 28, as Tyr
ance will sit in a classroom and take
his medical school entrance exam
while the rest of his teammates are
playing in the annual spring game.
“The coaches understand why I
am going to miss the game,’ * Tyrancc
said. “That is ihc day the test is given.
I have no control over it.”
Tyrancc said one area where he
would like to have more control is the
welfare of children. He said he docs
as much as he can by speaking about
the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse
through Best of Americans, Say No
To Drugs and The Fellowship of
Christian Athletes, three organiza
tions which are concerned about the
well-being of children and young
adults.
Tyrancc said his talks are benefi
cial.
“I am nervous talking in public,”
he said, “but if it can help the kids,
then I am more than happy to do it.”
