Henry Continued from Page 6 before becoming emperor chronicle his maturation as man and king. Bran agh’s Henry is very human as well. He is capable of *great cruelty, de manding extreme discipline among his men, yet he is kind to those loyal to his cause. The most powerful scene in the film follows the battle between the English and Prince Dauphinc’s French Army. A young boy unjustly is killed by the French during the battle, and Henry is so incensed by the futility of it all that he openly weeps in front of his soldiers. Simon Rattle’s operatic score thun ders, as Branagh carries the child’s body across the blood-soaked battle field. His camera makes a beautiful pan through the fog to close out the scene. If Branagh had done nothing else well in his film, this single moment would have made “Henry V” worth seeing. In just that one single mo ment, he makes a passionate declara tion of what filmmaking can be. The Oscar-nom inated “ Henry V ” comes to the Sheldon on Thursday, with playing times at 7 and 9:30 p.m., and matinees at 12:15 and 2:45 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. It returns the following weekend with the same playing times. Pianist performs honor concert for Varners From Staff Reports Pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy will perform today at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, in an effort to honor certain mem bers of the University of Nc braska-Lincoln community. Ashkenazy is the music di rector at the London Royal Phil harmonic Orchcstraand is inter nationally known for his contri butions to the music world. He won his first recognition at the Tchaikovsky Competi tion in Moscow in 1962 and since then has appeared in con certs and recitals diroughoutthe world. He currently is principal guest conductor for the Cleve land Orchestra and chief con ductor of the Radio Symphonic Orchcstcr Berlin. He has recorded as both a performer and a con ductor and has performed with musicians Itzhak Pcrman and Lynn Hafrell. The concert is sponsored by the University of Nebraska foun dation to recognize D.B. “Woody” and Paula Varner for their longtime commitment to the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and to recognize their commitment to enhance the performing arts in Nebraska. The privately funded event honors the Varners, as well as those who donated $100 or more to the Lied Center for Perform ing Arts. The show is not open to the public. William C. Smith, chairman of the foundation’s board of directors, said the concert is a fitting tribute to Woody Varner, who has served as the president of the University and as interim director of the Lied Center. ‘‘The Varners’ role in ob taining the funding and sustain ing the momentum to make this performing arts hall a reality shows a tremendous commit ment to the arts, to the univer sity and to Nebraska,” Smith said. “This concert is a means to show them and the many others who have contributed that die L ied Cen ler for Perform ing A rts is appreciated and that their participation has not been un noticed.” 64 Printing 70 Religious -——172 Rentals 2 Appliances 74 Social Services 3 Bicycles 76 Travel 4 Books 78 Tutoring 5 Clothing 80 Typing & Resumes 6 Computers i— 8 Furniture 9 Garage Sales _ 10 Misc.
