Woman Continued from Page 10 way personally,” she says. One thing leads to another, and Edward hires Vivian to be his escort for the week. As a business proposi tion. Of course, it was inevitable that I hey would fall in love. There arc some absolutely classic ccnes in this movie. One is when /ivian and Edward go shopping on todco Drive in Beverly Hills. A veri able shopfest through Gucci and jiorgio. The two walk into one of the stores, yhere the salespeople arc somewhat ukcwarm. Edward is not pleased. He summons the manager of the bou tique. “We’re going to need a lot more of being sucked up to, because that’s what we really like,’’ Edward says, flashing his Visa platinum card. “You understand.’’ “Well, sir, if I might say so, ’ the man says, “you’re in the right store, and the right city, for that.” In the end, through all the corpo rate buying, the polo games and the shopping, the two teach each other about life and love. The ending is refreshing and quite true to the Cinderella story. The screenwriting is good, but it is the first-class acting that makes this film a real winner. Gere and Roberts turn in stellar comedic performances. The supporting performances, espe daily by Laura San Giancomo (‘ ‘sex, lies and videotape”) as Vivian’s room mate, Kit, and by Jason Alexander as Edward’s snotty, sleazy lawyer, are commendable as well. Roberts is captivating as Vivian. Her spirited portrayal is a riot to watch. Roberts honed her comedic talents in “Mystic Pizza” and “Steel Magno lias,” and her portrayal of the tragic Shelby in “Steel Magnolias” won her an Academy Award nomination. Here’s hoping that Roberts’ snappy portrayal of Vivian also will win her awards. Gere is marvelous as Edward, the gorgeous ice prince. Gere’s Edward is sweet and tough, a person that wants to help people but also feels a need to protect himself by buying companies. He’s compassionate but doesn’t always think his actions through. The music complements the film without distracting. The judicious use of Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman” illustrates why the film was named without pounding it into the audi ence’s minds. James Newton How ard’s light, pretty score adds shading to the overall effect. Vivaldi’s classic suite, “The Four Seasons,” adds a gracious touch. And Gere wrote and performed a beautiful piano solo. “Pretty Woman” was filmed on location in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Burbank, Calif. The film was directed by Garry (“Happy Days,” “Laveme and Shirley”) Marshall. “Pretty Woman’ ’ opens Friday at the Douglas 3 Theatre, 13th and P streets. enteE^ainflientj Pianist to perform at Lied Center Pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy will perform Wednesday at the Lied Center for Perform ing Arts in a special concert to honor D. B. ‘ ‘Woody’ ’ and Paula Varner. The concert is sponsored by the University of Nebraska Foundation to recognize the Varners’ longtime commitment to enhance the performing arts in Nebraska.
