Nebraskans of Irish/Scotch-Irish Ancestry (NISIA) Vice Presi
dent Tom McFarland holds a map of his ancestral homeland.
Delving into Irish culture...
John Payne
Staff Reporter
Those interested in exploring
their Irish heritage can take
advantage of the recently
formed Nebraskans of Irish/Scotch
Irish Ancestry (NISIA), a club de
voted to studying the history and
culture of that land.
The group was formed Oct. 30,
1989, according to Evelyn Young,
NISIA president. Young, along with
Vice President Tom McFarland,
jokingly said the number of people
with Irish ancestry always increases
around St. Patrick’s Day.
“A lot of people tend to become
Irish this time of year,” she said.
“We’re Irish year-round.”
Group membership has grown
from 60 to about 116 in less than
five months, McFarland said. “We’ve
been amazed at how it has mush
roomed. And with St. Patrick’s Day
coming up, interest should pick up
even more.”
NISIA publishes a quarterly
newsletter for its members, holds
meetings to assist members doing
genealogical research, and has in
formal get-togethers.
The group has an “Irish Pub’’
parly planned at the Villager Motor
Inn & Convention Center, 5200 O
St., for St. Patrick’s Day, which will
include two vocalists singing tradi
tional Irish songs and lessons in
Irish dance.
McFarland said the “Irish Pub”
should attract many new members.
"There are many myths that exist
about Irish people,” he said. “The
Irish pub life, for instance is widely
misunderstood in this country. The
pubs are more social gathering
places than the American bars.
“People will spend all
often with their
family, talking over
one Guinness.”
