He said racism can be found in more subtle forms, such as the design of a T-shirt or racist language. Bowman said it is important that the fight against racism not end with Monday’s rally. It must be fought every day, he said. William Washington, a sopho more tight end on the Comhusker football team, said many black athletes decided to come to the rally to show leadership against racism. Because many blacks on cam pus participate in athletics, Wash ington said, it was important for theifi to get together and support the protesters. Athletes asked to be excused from practices so they could attend the rally, Washington said. He said about “97 percent of the black football players” were at the rally, along with athletes in baseball and track. Tom Clouse contributed to this story. Regents Continued from Page 1 was based on an “organizational prin ciple” and would benefit the coordi nation and governance of the two schools. Sen. Don Wesely of Lincoln agreed with McFarland, saying that the two schools have a “statewide role and mission” which would be best served by placing them under one board. But Withcm said the amendment would make UNL and UNMC one institution. He said the amendment4 ‘received no scrutiny’ ’ because it was not brought up until Monday. “I can’t sec any serious rationale for this amendment,” Withem said. Another amendment McFarland introduced was to change the pro posed 11 members on the new board of regents to eight. It also failed. Currently there are eight regents. He also included a section in the amendment to require those eight members to be appointed by the gov ernor. The resolution provides for the election and appointment of the re gents. McFarland said he hasn’t heard any reasoning for increasing the number from the current eight to the proposed 11 or to require a mix of elected and appointed members. “To me there is no real rationale for having that kind of a hybrid board,” he said. Greenhouse Continued from Page 1 “We do have to make choices,” Coordscn answered. “This is some thing that is not going to win anyone votes, but it is something that’s right. . . . over the long term, we cannot afford not to support the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.” Sen. Scott Moore of Seward said renovation of the greenhouses was 14th on the regents’ capital construc tion priority list last year. ‘‘If this is tantamount to ruination of research in the Institute of Agricul ture and Natural Resources, why on earth is it 14th on the priority list?” Moore asked. Sen. Ron Withcm of Papillion said Coordsen’s amendment is one ex ample of the ‘‘end run” Sen. Jim McFarland of Lincoln was referring to in the morning’s debate about re structuring of higher education. McFarland had said that by having the Legislature appropriate money to i—:--— each higher education institution, each university or college would try to bypass the regents and go directly to the Legislature. “Yes, I’m trying to preempt the board of regents,” Coordscn said. “I’m doing so because I firmly be lieve I’m right. I have an abiding faith in the members of this Legislature to do what is right.” I $499 Laptop!
