Left Continued from Page 6 and sisters treat him with compas sion, but, with the exception of the oldest sister, Sheila (Alison Whclan\ don’t believe he is mentally sound. The adults are unkind, treating Brown as a mental defective. Mrs. Brown is an intensely reli gious Irish Catholic, and despite what her friends, neighbors and even her family say, has total faith in her son. “Don’t you worry, Christy,” she says to her young son. “Even if we can’t understand you, God can.” Brown rewards that faith by pick ing up a piece of chalk with his foot and writing “Mother” on the floor. By this point, Brown’s family — and the audience — are in tears. Before long, with the help of a doctor named Eileen Cole, Brown’s family is able to understand him. With the speech therapy that Cole gives him, Christy is able to speak more clearly. People are able to understand him, and become a little less afraid of him. Cole even helps Brown put on an exhibit of his work, and Brown expe riences emotions of love and denial when he falls in love with Cole. Daniel Day-Lewis is excellent as Brown. When watching him live the character of Brown, it is easy to for get that it isn’t the real Christy Brown on the movie screen. He is brilliant at reminding the audience that, while cerebral palsy victims may have body parts that do not work perfectly, they still have very real emotions and feelings. Brenda Fricker is his mother, the only person who believes in him at first. Fricker is inspiring as Mrs. Brown. Her strong belief in her son is touch ing. “My Left Foot” was filmed on location in Dublin and Wicklow counties in Ireland. The majority of the footage was shot in the city of Dublin. The screenplay is written by S hane Connaughton and Jim Sheridan and is based on the book “My Left Foot” by Christy Brown. “My Left Foot’ ’ is a testimonial to the resilience of the human spirit. It is a celebration of life, and the realiza tion that a body does not have to be perfect to be loved and talented. “My Left Foot” is nominated for a number of Academy Awards. The smart money should be on it to win Best Picture. “My Left Foot” is playing at the Douglas 3 Theatre, 1300 P St. I Ne&an Classified 472-2588 Tuesday, March 6,1 S90 ^*=== 164 Printing 70 Religious -72 Rentals Appliances 74 Social Servioes Bicycles 76 Travel Books 78 Tutoring Clothing 80 Typing 4 Resumes Computers BnHHmwnB Furniture Bl]T?»Ii>< i.
