Stewart provided some much needed color to the Big Eight coaches’ call Monday by explod ing at a reporter who asked if he had become a more subtle coach. The reporter was basing his ques tion on personal observations and the cancer and ulcer surgery the veteran coach underwent last sea son. 5icwan responded inai ne naun i changed at all. He then provided an answer which baffled the media audience. “To be honest,” Stewart said, “I think the difference in the news is the way they’re reporting it.” When the reporter dared to ask Stewart what that comment meant, the Stewart responded, “Who asked that (expletive) question?” When told, Stewart replied, “That (expletive) figures.” Player position, technical fouls clarified for intramural competition Q: A player drives the baseline towards the basket and collides with an opponent. What factors does the official consider in making the per sonal foul call? The call depends on how vertical the defensive player remains. Once the defender has established a legal position. he or she may move upward within a plane from the floor to the ceiling. If the defensive player leaves this space, the foul must be called on the defense. If the offensive player invades this space, a player control foul would be called against the offensive player. The key to this call is the vertical ity of the defender. The vertiealily of the defensive player clearly deter mines who the foul should be called on. Q: A defensive player establishes a legal position in the offensive player’s' path before a shot is at tempted. The shooter jumps and releases the ball on a try for goal. After releasing the ball the shooter charges into the established defen sive player. The basket goes in. A charging foul is called on the shooter. /X • 4 Does the basket count? In this situation, the basket does not count according to high school and Office of Campus Recreation intramural rules. The ball became dead immedi ately when the player control foul on the shooter occurred. The ball is awarded to the defensive team at a designated spot closest to where the foul was committed. In college and professional games, though, the basket would count. Q: Team A takes the ball out of bounds for a throw-in near the divi sion line. The thrower lobs the ball > towards A’s basket for an apparent catch and dunk attempt by a team mate. The pass is slightly off course and goes directly through team A’s basket. What’s the call? No goal can be scored if a throw-in goes through the basket before being t/-\iUti an ■ n11nr nlniiAr B gets a throw-in at the spot from which Team A threw the ball. Q: The official hands the ball to an offensive player for a throw-in. A defender closely guarding the of fensive player touches the ball be fore it is thrown in. What’s the call? Once the ball is at the disposal of the offensive team it is considered a live ball. Upon touching the ball, the de fender is charged with a personal technical foul. The offensive team shoots two free throws and is awarded the ball out of bounds at the division line. Q: An intramural game between Team A and Team B is scheduled to start at 7:50 p.m. on Sapp court No. 4. Team A arrives at 7:35 p.m. and begins warming up. Team B ar rives at 7:40 p.m., gets their jerseys, and signs each player’s name and number on the scorecard. At 7:50 p.m. the officials beckon each team to begin play. Team A has yet to sign its players names and numbers on the scorecard. What’s Team A's punishment? In this situation one rule applies: Game time is forfeit time. Each team must be signed in and ready to play at the time the game is scheduled. A forfeit would be called on Team A because they had not signed in before 7:50 p.m. At game time each team must be signed in, have at least three players r\n ihf» f’rvuri anrl havp -a live at the scorer’s table. Failure to meet these three requirements will result in a forfeiture by the offending team. When a game has been ruled a forfeit, the offending team also loses one-half of its forfeit fee. Two for feits make a team ineligible for post season play. Nebraska men’s swimming coach Cal Bentz said closing out the dual season with a 128-114 victory against Iowa on Friday in Iowa City, Iowa, was ideal. The win was the Comhuskers first against the eighth-ranked Hawkeyes in three years. “It was nice to win after three years of drought,” Bentz said. “Iowa is always a good team to beat.” The Huskers will try to capture their 1 Ith-consecutiveBig Eight title when they compete in the conference : - Continued from Page 7 Now the question is, how can Cresswell hit only five of his 15 two pointers? championships March 1-3. The NCAA competition will take place March 22-24 in Indianapolis, Ind. Bentz said Nebraska will change its workout schedule to prepare itself. The next two weeks will be spent ‘‘focusing’ ’ and resting up for the Big Eight championships. “We’ll do a lot of focusing,” Bentz said, “and in terms of work volume we won’t have a lot of intensity.” Matt Eastin and Curt Croes led Nebraska's effort against Iowa last weekend. Croes and Eastin earned automatic berths to the NCAA com petition by sweeping the top two places in the meet’s 1-meter diving compe tition with 309.67 and 303. Bentz said he was surprised by Eastin’s performance because it was the firstiimc the freshman from Phoe A similar statistic, adjusted free throw percentage, would be nice. For this, the player would be charged with missed free throws for missing the front end of a one-and-one. Thai’s a missed chance for two points, and should be put down as such. Of course, all these numbers add up to one thing: a 9-14 record for Nebraska. The numbers will never replace the impressions taken from nix, Ari/.., had competed since undcr going shoulder surgery during winter break. He said the injury has kept Eastin from competing in the 3-mctcr competition. Bent/ said he was equally pleased with the two divers’ performances. “It was nice to have them come out and do well,’’ he said. Bcntz said Nebraska also received a boost from Jan Bidrman, Sean Framp ton and Peter Williams. Williams won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.38 sec onds. Frampton teamed with Bidrman, Williams and Craig Bilyeu to form the Huskcrs’ 400 medley relay team that won in 3:24 minutes. Bidrman also won the 200 individ ual medley and the 200 breaststroke in 1:50.60 and 2:02.05. watching a game. But for those of us who can’t see every game, more statistics would translate the action better. And if baseball stays dormant, basketball statistics may be all we have this summer.
