Huskers

the game was stopped and players
from both teams were asked to speak
to their coaches.
Nee, who was whistled for two
consecutive technical fouls late in the
second half, said the action was taken
because the officials wanted some
rough play stopped. He said the rough
play involved elbows being thrown
by both teams.
Rough play or not, Nee said Ne
braska was hurt by cold shooting. The
Huskers, now 9-13 overall and 2-7 in
the Big Eight, opened the game by
connecting on only three of their first
25 shots.
“When you’re missing shots, you’re
spinning your wheels,” Nee said. “It
was very frustrating.”
Oklahoma State used Nebraska’s
poor shooting and the hot hand of
forward Byron Houston to take a 41
28 lead at halftime. Houston, a 6
foot-7 sophomore, tallied 17 of his
game and career-high 35 points in the
opening stanza.
Nee said Nebraska never got back
in the game after its poor start.
“You dig a hole against a good
basketball team, I don’t care what
you do,” Nee said. “It’s going to be
very difficult to comeback.”

appears. Nebraska coaches deny
knowledge of steroid use.
September 1989 -- The long
awaited hatchet-job on Nebraska
football finally comes in the form of
“Big Red Confidential: Inside Ne
braska Football” written by former
SI investigative reporter Armen
Keteyian. The book is laced with al
legations against the program, often
by unidentified sources. The book’s
main themes include drug use by
Husker players and a general lack of
player discipline.
While Osborne denies the allega
tions, several of the players and other
sources contradict themselves when
questioned by the media. Keteyian
lashes out at Osborne, accusing him
of trying to “kill the messenger” of
bad news.
Like before, the issues fade away.
February 1990 — The Hartford
(Conn.) Courant publishes a six-part
scries on DuBose, who is from Un
casville. Conn. The stories reveal
DuBose’s drug problems and quotes
the former Husker on drug use at
Nebraska, illegal benefits from boost
ers and discipline problems among
the team members.
Once again, Osborne and other
Nebraska officials deny any improper
behavior on their part or knowledge
of the events outlined by Greg Gar
ber, the author of the series.
So the beat goes on ...
Denial seems to be the action of
choice among Nebraska’s coaches and
officials. Perhaps rightly so.
Still, it seems strange that so many
people continue to come up with the
same story. Reporters, sports agents
and former players and recruits . ..
the list goes on and on.
It’s common for Husker football
fans to dismiss such allegations as
“so-and-so is just out to get the Husk
ers.” What these fans forget is that in
49 states, most people couldn’t care
less about Nebraska football.
In other words, nobody is out to
get the program. It’s nol that simple.
What is simply, however, is that
there is a problem in college athletics,
especially in revenue-generating sports
like football. Cheating has become
common, like it or not.
It can happen here. Maybe it al
ready has. If so, when will it stop and
who will stop it?
