Faculty backs senate restructuring From Staff Reports The University of Nebraska Lincoln Faculty Senate announced Tuesday that faculty members, in a referendum by mail, overwhelm ingly supported a restructuring proposal. Under the plan, the senate would increase from 60 to 90 members and would be renamed the Aca demic Senate. A separate UNL Assembly would consist of the chancellor, five vice chancellors, three deans and other faculty members. Senate representation would include one representative for every five or more faculty members in a department. Currently, each sena tor represents 25 faculty members in one or more departments. Faculty members approved the proposal by a vote of 363-39 in the referendum. The proposal still must be approved by the NU Board of Regents, Faculty Senate President James McShane said the proposed changes would be effective in representing UNL faculty members. “It’s certainly worth a try,” he said. CFA member Brad Brunz said, “Two thousand people coming through the door is advertisement enough for campus recreation.” The committee will continue dis cussion of the campus recreation budget Thursday, after considering some line items Tuesday. The University Health Center also submitted its 1990-91 budget request Tuesday. Kunle Ojikutu, director of the health center, said UHC is requesting an additional 58 cents per student per semester for 1990-91, which would bring its studentassessment to $66.30 per semester. CFA will vote on the health center request Thursday. The student unions will present their 1990-91 budget requests immediately following the vote. Recycle Continued from Page 1 place receptacles in Cather and Pound. Keeshan said he would empty the bins and keep 60 percent of the prof its, giving the remaining 40 percent to the residence halls. Kristin Foster, Pound Hall presi dent, said Cather/Pound officials decided it would be easier and more profitable for the halls to collect the cans. “We can do the same thing (that Keeshan suggested),” Foster said. “We have devised a plan that would be much better and we would get 100 percent of the profits.” Andy Williams, a Cather senator, and Mike Lcupold, Cather/Pound/ Ncihardt director of maintenance, devised the plan. Williams said he marks the cans according to which floor saved them, then tells each floor’s treasurer how much money was received for them. The plan is unique, he said, be cause the work going into it is done by student volunteers. “Right now it is in the experimen tal stage,” Foster said. “We have cans on certain floors with someone watching them, and when it’s full, they call Andy.” Foster said bins have been in the halls for about two weeks, but she doesn’t know how many cans have been collected. The plan started with just one floor in Gather participating and has grown to six floors in Cather and Pound. “I want to implement it in every hall,” Williams said. “I’m not get ting anything out of it; I just want to see it in action. Foster said, “The more they (stu dents) learn about it, the more recep tive they’ll be.” James Vihstadt, a Harper senator, is trying to get a recycling program similar to Williams’ started in his complex. “We are trying to come up with a uniform program for the halls to fol low,” Vihstadt said. Williams said he wants to get re cycling started in greck houses as well. Williams said he and Vihstadt will present a proposal to the Residence Hall Association to start a campuswidc recycling program.
