According to local merchants, more and more brides are choosing gowns in all black or in black and white for their attendants. . J '■ And grooms and J groomsmen arc \ matching the womens’ gowns / with the same col- \ ors lor their luxe- j The “southern belle’ ’ bridesmaid gown done in pas tel shades with a flounced, floor-length skirt is taking a back scat to the con temporary black gown designed with a straight “sheath’’ skirt, said Vickie Clark, owner of Desiree’s Bridal Boutique, 5555 So. 48th St., Suite A. Often brides will accent the all black attendants’ gowns with a red cumbcrbund and tie for the grooms and groomsmens’ black tuxedos, said Jeff Brehm, general manager of Holway Rcnt-A-Tux, 1228 P St. “Every body wants black,” he said. “White is going out fast.” Even mothers of the brides arc choosing black more frequently for their dresses, said Joyce Jacobs, owner and manager of J’Maries Bridal Shoppe, 1409 N. 66th St., Suite 405. “They’re accepting it as a designer color,” she said. Jacobs said that she thinks a reason for the recent surge in black is be cause it is a color that looks formal and elegant. She said many brides even are using the color for summer weddings. Brides also arc selecting tea-length skirts, skirts that fall about two inches above the ankle, more often for their attendants, Clark said. Jacobs said she thinks part of the reason for the increase in the tea length dress sales is because brides maids want to buy a dress they can wear again. A black dress with a straight tea length skirt obviously could be worn more easily as evening wear than a dress with a hoop skirt, she said. Brehm said most grooms are going with all-black tuxedos and variation usually is done with accessories. He said he’s seen much of that accessorizing done with vests, which have made a recent comeback. An all-black tuxedo can be brightened up by pairing it with a colored vest, either to match the bridesmaids’ dresses or to simply add a splash ot color. Iridescent cumberbunds and tics are another recent trend for tuxedos, he said, and ascot tics have declined in popularity. Some brides arc making their grooms stand out slightly from their groomsmen by picking pants that feature a silk stripe on the legs or by altering the accessories, he said. Coattails and double-breasted jack ets arc other styles that have been and continue to be popular, he said. But not all brides arc choosing black, Clark and Jacobs said. “Jewel tones,” like sapphire blue, ruby red and emerald green still are picked for attendants’ dresses, Jacobs _ said. And pastel colors, like peach, sea foam green and light rose, have not faded out, she said. Those shades arc “always in,” she said. Floral patterns for bridesmaids’ dresses also are trendy now, espe cially those done in a chintz, cotton like fabric that has a sheen to it, she said. Clark said many mothers are de ciding to wear two-piece suits to their daughters’ weddings because not enough designers arc making dresses for them. “It’s unfortunate that the mother of the bride can’t find a dress she likes.” Jacobs said she’s noticed a lot of mothers who want youngcr-looking dress styles, and those that don’t feci comfortable wearing black for a wedding are starting to pick ivory dresses. She said the mother of the bride is supposed to be the official hostess of the wedding, and recently mothers have started wanting to “look the pan.” They’re pairing big, “showy” earrings or strands of elegant Bar bara Bush pearls” w ith their ivory or black gowns, she said. Clark said her store has had a re cent increase in the number of brides and bridesmaids renting their gowns. Since August of 1989, only two of the 35 wedding parties die store has handled have purchased their brides maids’ gowns. An average cost for a bridesmaid ’ s dress is S150, she said, and gowns can be rented for about S65 to S75. Jacobs said her store rents tuxedos from si/e three and up, but deals only in sales of brides and attendants’ dresses. An average cost of an attendant’s gown is $110, she said.
