Parker Continued from Page 1 together,” he said. Parker gave the example of the man who is called a chauvinist and responds defensively. He said guilt causes people to respond that way. Instead, Parker said, people should open up communication and discuss the matter. It s difficult to learn prejudice reduction when personal “truths” are programmed into people between the ages of 7 and 14, Parker said."He said these are truths like “being different is being deficient.” Parker started group participation by asking Catholics, Baptists, Jewish people, Germans anu Diacks to raise I their hands. Then he asked members of each group to express ways they had been discriminated against. Parker said he was surprised when white males failed to speak up imme diately, because everyone experiences discrimination in some form. Nex t, Parker asked the members of the audience to express what makes them feel that someone cares. After hearing over 20 different views from the audience, Parker said he wanted every person to understand that caring about yourself is the first step to car ing about someone else. Parker heard stories about audi ence members’ experiences with people unlike them, and shared one of his own. He said he has learned a lot about being sensitive from his grandson who has cerebral palsy. Parker said it took his family seven years to enroll his grandson in a school for gifted stu dents, simply because the child is unable to walk. Handicapped people are the most loving in the world,” he said. At the conclusion of his prejudice reduction workshop, Parker asked all members of the audience to join hands and “feel the brotherhood flow through out the room.” Prejudice reduction is a self-test, he said. Tomorrow, he urged, “put out your antennae,” be more sensitive, and share with others. Parker’s keynote address was part of a two-day workshop on the IJNL campus to commemorate Black His tory Month.
