The play, set in an abortion clinic,
centers on the struggle of several
women to cope with their abortion
options. Through scenes with abor
tion counselors, the play ultimately
supports the right of a woman to make
her own choice when dealing with an
unwanted pregnancy.
The play is directed by two Uni
versity of Nebraska-Lincoln gradu
ate students, Marya Lucca-Thyberg
and Gretchcn DeSmidt, who have been
working with the script for several
months.
“It’s timely with current contro
versy and debate,” DeSmidt said in
explaining the play’s attraction.
“We’re open to controversy. There

trashes it against the nearest wall.
The Beatles never did that.
But Das Damen’s real beauty lies
in their ability to bandage your skull
moments af ter drilling it. Their heav
ily distorted tunes bend from power
chord choruses to sudden ethereal string
melodics.
To date, the band’s biggest claim
to fame has been a legal suit filed by
Michael Jackson, who owns the Beatles
catalogue.
The majority of Damen’s tunes
have constant background harmonics
behind the sonic wall of sound, a
wafting scrum that cures any illness
caused by infectious feedback.

may be some uproar or letters to the
editor though.”
Although the production is being
done on campus by a group of college
students, DeSmidt and Lucca-Thy
berg hope it will spark interest off
campus as well. Fliers promoting the
play were sent to various women’s
groups and organizations in order to
attract attention from outside the
university, DeSmidt said.
“Choices, a play about women
with a cast almost entirely of women,
was made to be accessible to men and
may provide them with a new under
standing of the issue, DeSmidt said.
The show starts at 8 each night.
Admission is $1.
Songs like “24 To Zero” and “Hey
Angel” crash out of the speakers,
then suddenly change gears and melt
into melody. Alex Totino and Jim
Walters swap vocal and guitar chores,
wallowing in feedback and relishing
in distortion to the point of catharsis.
But the release is in the song breaks,
the simple strings, even a lone piano
in “Click.” These gilts attract both
garage band addicts and ’60s freaks.
All vocals drift harmoniously,
somehow behind the music, but still
prevail. Das Damen arc growing,
maturing and getting wiser between
the spine-tingling, wah-wah pedals
and cat-yowl arpeggios.
Undoubtedly, Das Damen are col
lege guys that can never escape the
punk blood flowing through their veins.
But who wants them to?
