UPC Continued from Page 1 controversial issues. The UPC Fund Allocation Com mittee has requested more than a 233 percent increase over last year in its budget. In 1989, FAC requested $1,500, but had held $1,900 over from the previous year, Sherbeck said. By mid-October all of this money had been allocated, Sherbeck said. Sherbeck said some organizations’ requests had to be denied this year because FAC didn’t have the money. This year FAC has requested $5,000. FAC provides money for programs sponsored by any recognized student organization, Sherbeck said. An or ganization can receive money from FAC once every four years, she said. Sherbeck said FAC’s budget is structured so that it can carry over unused portions of its budget to the next year. “When we have a carry-over bal ance, that is great because it means we’ve helped everyone who needs help,’’ Sherbeck said. The lack of a holdover balance and the anticipation of increased requests has led to the requested $3,500 in crease, Sherbcck said. Kramer said he hopes students will attend the committee’s meetings, ask questions and listen. “I would encourage students to come out and voice their opinions because it’s hard for 11 people to make decisions for 24,000,’’ he said. UPC has requested $214,802.26, up 21 percent from last year, or $5.16 per student paying Fund A student fees. Consent Continued from Page 1 Bemard-Stevens’ right to divide the • amendment. Bemard-Stevens then said that he is a “sincere sly fox,’’ and that he substituted the amendment because he was afraid it would not be consid ered if Schmit’s motion to suspend the rules passed. Sen. Sandra Scofield of Chadron then moved to delay consideration on the bill until Wednesday, but senators voted against her motion. By continuing debate on the divi sion, Schmit said, Bemard-Stevens is using the system to his advantage. “He made an end run, and we were all caught with our mouths open,’ ’ Schmit said. Labedz asked Bemard-Stevens why he hadn’t shown the amendment, dated Jan. 12, to senators earlier. “I may be a sly fox, but I’m not a fool,” Bemard-Stevens replied, say ing his amendment had a better chance of consideration by introducing it without senators’ prior knowledge. Bemard-Stevens finally decided he would divide his amendment into seven different amendments instead of 19, but this motion was denied by Presi dent of the Legislature William Nichol. After Bemard-Stevens moved to overrule the chair, the Legislature adjourned until this morning. Animal science Continued from Page 1 Even though some of their friends tease them about the smell, the build ing’s ventilation system helps keep the rooms fresh, he said. Prior said that his day starts at 6 a.m. when he, along with Sherbcck and Hcnn, a junior mechanical agri culture major from Grand Island, feed the animals before going to class. The three students also work after class and on some weekends, Prior said. He said that he learned about the rooms from Sherbcck, who worked in the Animal Science Building but lived in Burr Residence Hall on East Cam pus. Last fall they moved in, along with freshmen Mick Goedekcn of Bell wood and Alisa Wood of Palmyra and sophomore Melanie Homung of Ray mond. Prior said the men live in two rooms located next to each other, while the women have one room that is sepa rated from the men’s by a lounge and small kitchen. The four men share one bathroom while the women share a bathroom on their end, he said. Although it is inexpensive and con venient to live and work in the same building, the students said, living in a public building causes some prob lems. From 7 pjn. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday the doors are locked, Prior said. He said the six students have keys to get into the building, but if any of their friends want to come in they have to be let in by someone living there. But both Prior and Sherbcck said they probably will live there next year. ' ‘ This is the cheapest way going, ’ ’ Prior said. ‘Til have to graduate be fore leaving.” Galen Loseke, a UNL livestock operations manager and manager of the three apartments in the Animal Science Complex, said undergradu ate students have lived in the building since 1987. Loseke said the students must fol low the same rules as students living in residence halls. Not only do the students take care of the animals, he said, but they also are extra security for the building.
