Larson returns with ‘odd world’ of Eskimos, jungles By Michael Deeds Senior Editor The freaker is back. You know, the weird guy, the demented jerk, the man who steps across the line but pulls his foot back before it touches the ground. Cartoonist Gary Larson has sal down at the drawing table once again, and this time he’s not kidding around. After a 14-month creative hiatus, the creator of “The Far Side” has returned to dabble with the minds of America. The first of his new comic panels appeared in more than 900 newspapers on Jan. 1. The new rc - leases run the full gamut of his odd world, from Eskimos and jungles to Carmen Miranda and Geraldo Riv era. Face it, Larson is just plain weird. Faithful readers were shocked when the cartoon i st/god announced his breather and gave up “The Far Side” on Oct. 30, 1988. Newspapers have been printing selections from Lar son’s earliest works to run during the sabbatical. But don’t worry — Larson hasn’t been starving during his leave of absence. “The PreHistory of the Far Side,” a paperback collection, shot to num ber one on the New York Times Paperback Best Seller list. For 1990 alone, nearly 4 million calendars have been purchased. The first book, “The Far Side,” is in its 31st printing.
