Notre Dame coach owes no apology for remarks Notre Dame Iootball coach Lou Holtz doesn’t need to apolo gize to anyone. It seems a controversy has broken out over a comment Holtz made while preparing his team for its Orange Bowl matchup against Colorado. Holtz said the Buffaloes would be confused by the third quarter of their New Year’s Day-matchup and would start to “grab bag” because they weren’t playing Kansas State. I Jeff | Apel Never mind that the comment was made during a closed practice and that the only way it was leaked to the press was because an unethical tele vision reporter hid a sensitive micro phone some 50 yards away. Never mind that Holtz was never contacted before the comments were released. Never mind that he was right. And never mind that when the comments were released, they were taken so far out of context that even fellow jour nalists were embarrassed. Kansas State athlcuc director Steve Miller wants an apology. Mi Her described Holtz’s comment as “incredibly insensitive’’ and said he fully expected Holtz to offer an apology. wow. I hat s almost as iunny as Kansas State’s football program. In the first place, Holtz’s com ments weren’t meant to be public. Imagine what would happen if every thing Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and his staff said in confidentiality was released. The negative comments about Kansas State and the rest of the Big Eight would be endless. There would be talk about how bad Kansas State is and how Wildcat coach Bill Snyder is a predictable, over-paid mentor who will never win because he is a Hayden Fry prototype. There also would be talk about a fear of Iowa State coach Jim Walden who is slowly building his program into a powerhouse that will consis tently challenge for the Big Eight title. Fortunately, no member of the Nebraska media has ever stooped so low as to hide a microphone at a perfectly legal practice and then re lease a questionable transcript in hopes of providing extra incentive for any Cornhuskcr team. If they ever did, an abrupt apology would be in order. In the Holtz-Kansas State saga, the only person who owes an apology is the Denver television reporter who showed an incredible lack of com mon sense. He should apologize -- not Holtz. NCAA Continued from Page 7 II member colleges and universities to make public each October the gradu ation rates of their student-athletes. The law, which mandates that the rates be broken down by sport and even by race among football and basketball players, was passed 320-4 in Division I and 178-6 in Division II. Kind of makes you wonder who the 10 dissenting presidents were. doesn’t it? The new rule is a step in the right direction, a step that isn’t carrying the NCAA closer and closer to the edge of lack-of-respcct-induccd extinction. Most of the NCAA’s additions to the rulcbook in recent years have been unworkable ones, rules that can’t be enforced or regulated as well as they need to be to gain the intended results. If member presidents don’t realize that, the NCAA might not be the only institution to vanish. Could you imagine college with out sports?
