would result in the abolition of the
state college board, LaGreca said
the trustees’ position is “not de
fensive in any way.”
The potential for abolishment
of our board does not unnerve us if
it will be replaced by a structure
that, by its makeup and constitu
tional charge, must be responsive
to needs of the entire state,” La
Greca said in the statement
The uncertainty surrounding
the future structure of Nebraska’s
higher education impairs each in
stitution’s plans to move ahead,
the statement says.
If debate over the proposed
changes delays a decision, it says,
higher education officials will be
come confused and frustrated, re
ducing education’s effectiveness
in all sectors.
‘ ‘If change is needed, let’s get it
done,” the report states.
The board raised seven ques
tions for the Higher Education
Committee to discuss: which
board would be the employer for
legal purposes; how current bond
indebtedness would be transferred
to new boards; how credits would
transfer; what is the cost/benefit
analysis; how budget requests
would be handled; what the rela
tionship of college boards for sen
ior institutions and community
college boards would be; and
whether the committee will spell
out the responsibilities of individ
ual college or university boards as
compared to a new board of re
gents.
