UNL students trouped to Ames, Iowa, on Feb. 2, 1981 to see Bruce Springsteen bring down Hilton Coli seum with his pumpcd-up stage an tics. Although supported by the E Street Band, Springsteen’s intense performance almost made the con cert a one-man show. Besides musical changes, UNL students witnessed changes in the make-up of the downtown Lincoln entertainment scene. The debut of P.O. Pear’s added a new source of entertainment to Lin coln. Pear’s outrageous decor, food specials and odd forms of entertain ment, like banana-eating contests, made it enticing to college students. A chain of restaurants based on the West Coast, Pear’s called its Lincoln location a step toward eastward ex pansion. Although Lincoln’s downtown greeted this new hangout, it said fare well to what had been one of its biggest retail attractions, Brandcis. Even though downtown entertain ment was expanding, the retail mar ket declined as Brandcis closed. Many downtown merchants were concerned about declining sales be cause Brandcis generated a lot of business. i_ Also affecting the lives of UNL students was the changing drinking age. Increased from 19 to 20, many students found their wait for drinking freedom prolonged one more year if they were bom after July 18, 1961. And bar owners were concerned about tricky 19-ycar-olds trying to beat the grandfather clause. This was another downtown con cern, as Lincoln bars faced a possible loss in business because of the new drinking age. The drinking.agc change gave the local bar scene a new twist. Many UNL students saw an anticipated freedom one more year out of their reach. UNL. students were in the middle of a shifting entertainment era. Con cert-going was at a high point with many top performers coming to the area. With the addition of new-wave culture, music fans saw their musical tastes and opportunities broadened. Punk influences would become more evident as its popularity grew. On the grand scale, the 1980-81 school year symbolized the shedding of the last coal of* 70s influences. The killing of John Lennon also killer! the hopes of a Beatles reunification. Al though their music would live on, the Beatles era would not. r-—--- — 1— -■ J 2VA00t This coupon is worth ^ ! $U $40.00 <>, | for 2 donations in one week, for new donors and repeat donors who have not returned in 2 months. This new acoustic sound is good, and like all the other sounds you can think of, Annie Lennox’s voice sounds good behind just a guitar. Listening to all three songs from the record company was re laxing and a good change of pace for the group. Not to be mislead ing, on the real album there arc ten songs. Lennox has a great vocal range, and with her very recognizable I voice il couldn’t be anyone else. David Stewart sings with Len nox on “Baby’s Gonna Cry’’ and they both really bring out that “I used to love her but I had to kill her” attitude. There is one point in the song where the person who was watch ing the levels fell asleep. That part made both my woofer and tweeter shake. “Don’t Ask Me Why,” is a Eurythmics remake with guitar. The real heart and soul of the album is on the song “When the Day Goes Down.” Lennox uses that talent you have to be bom with, and you can hear the care and concern in her voice. Artists usually devote their rec ords to someone or something they care about. And this is for the broken dreamers, and this is for the vacant souls. And this is for the hopeless losers, and this is for the helpless fools.” -- A complete set of instructions for the first time smoker. Don’t.
