Nebraska men’s swimming coach Cal Bentz said the meet is unique because it will include eight sprint events that do not exceed 200 yards. The meet also will include 1 and 3-meter diving competitions. Bentz said sprint classics arc rare in the United States even though they are common in Europe. Ne braska staged its first sprint classic last year, and captured the team title by defeating Southern Methodist 60 48. This year’s field for the meet in cludes men’s teams from Nebraska, Texas, Michigan, Iowa and Kenyon College, a Division III school from Gambier, Ohio. The meet is free for all University of Nebraska-Lincoln students who present their student IDs, and begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Bob Devancy Sports Center. The Nebraska women’s swim ming team also will be in action Sat urday, as it will travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face the Kansas Jay hawks. That meet begins at 2 p.m. at the Robinson Natatorium. Bentz said he is looking forward to the sprint classic even though his team is coming off a tough week. Seven of Nebraska’s top swimmers just returned from the U.S. Open in Indianapolis, while the rest of the team is coming off a three-day vic tory in the Husker Invitational. Bentz said he knows the meet’s competition will be tough. Texas is the defending national champion, while Michigan finished third at last year’s NCAA championships. In addition, Iowa finished eighth at the NCAA competition, while Nebraska was 10th. The meet’s re maining competitor, Kenyon Col lege, is a Division III powerhouse. Bentz said he doesn’t know how the team standings will stack up. “It’s really hard to measure,” he said, “but I think it will be a close race.” Bentz said he knows the meet will be beneficial. “The talent is going to be good,” Bentz said, “and we know there’s going to be some fast races. We just hope we can be part of those races.” Nebraska women’s swimming coach Ray Huppert said he hopes his squaa is also pan oi some iasi races when it faces Kansas. The 4-0 Jay hawks are led by Barb Pranger, a sophomore who earned All-America honors in the 100-yard breaststroke last season. Huppert said Nebraska is not going to change its training habits to prepare for Kansas. The Jayhawks are the defending Big Eight champi ons. Kansas will enter the meet with an advantage, as it shaved and tapered prior to its third-place finish in last weekend’s Arkansas Invitational. Tapering is a process in which swim mers attempt to improve their times by resting. ‘‘I know Kansas is a good team, but right now we’re still focusing on what needs to be done at the end of the year,” Huppert said. “I’m not saying that we’re going to let Kansas walk all over us. We feel it’s real important to go down there with the idea of beating them, but our No. 1 goal remains winning the Big Eight cham pionship.” Huppert said he has a lot of respect for Kansas. ‘‘Kansas is just a great team,” he said. UNL to field flag football team at championship in New Orleans By Jeff Apel Senior Editor The Sweet Hogs will participate in the National Collegiate Flag Football Championships after all. Kcnda Schcele, the coordinator of intramural sports at the Office of Campus Recreation, said the Sweet Hogs earned a berth in the national competition when Gleason’s Team cancelled. Gleason’s Team had qualified for the competition by win ning the University of Nebraska-Lin coln’s co-rec title. I Scheele said she originally told the Sweet Hogs that they could not compete in the championships be cause they missed the Nov. 22 entry deadline. The Sweet Hogs won the all-university men’s title by defeat ing Sigma Phi Epsilon B-2 7-0. Scheele said she could not enter the Sweet Hogs late because student fees pay the entry fee. Teams who entered the tournament by Nov. 22 were charged S230, while squads who entered after that date were charged an additional S20. The tournament, which is held in conjunction with the Sugar Bowl, begins Dec. 27 in New Orleans. The competition will begin with round robin play, and will conclude with single-elimination competition. Scheele said she was glad the Sweet Hogs were available to play in the tournament. She said the Office of Campus Recreation ran into an unfor tunate situation last year when a team cancelled out, and no replacement could be found. “That left a very bad taste in our See TRAVELERS on 17 .. i Tips On Car Repair Before You Call For Service • First read the owner's manual.
