REVIEW
This film is about love, reality,
faith, delusion, success, failure, good
and evil. It has some very funny
moments. It has an amazing reservoir
of talent.
And it’s very hard to follow unless
you’re a die-hard Woody Allen fan.
“Crimes and Misdemeanors” is a
contemporary film set in New York
City and provides a wide gamut of
nmAtiAnri ffrxrM rtvl /-»1 « r iVAfi/Mi.i
material to distinctly comcdic ele
ments. Allen makes a statement on
life with this film; his message seems
to be that people make their own luck
in this world, and that if people do not
get out and fight for their rights, no
one else will do it for them.
The film is a microcosm of New
York City; it examines the lifestyles
of several completely unrelated char
acters. The film is almost like two
movies put together under one ban
ner; the story of conniving ophthal
mologist Judah Rosenthal (Martin
Landau) will be shown during one
moment, the story of pui-upon film
director Cliff Stem (Woody Allen)
will be shown another moment. The
film touches upon age-old themes
such as murder, infidelity and reli
gion; examination of the problems
facing the characters is modem.
Stars in this ensemble film include
Allen and Landau; Claire Bloom as
Landau’s wife Miriam; Jerry Orbach
as his brother Jack; and Angelica
Huston as his mistress, Delores
Paley. The film also stars Alan Alda
as pompous producer Lester; Mia
Farrow as producer Halley Reed;
Caroline Aaron as Barbara; Joanna
Gleason as Wendy Stem; and Sam
Waterston as Ben. For many of the
actors, this is their first appearance in
a Woody Allen film. They have taken
his direction well, and all have natu
ral talent.
Alda, especially, is quite good in
mis Him. ra iiiukcs a complete de
parture from the role that he is per
haps most well-known for --
Hawkcye Pierce on M*A*S*H - to
play a boorish, conceited and often
vain television prixlucer named
Lester. Alda is very hard to like in this
role, but somehow he manages to
redeem himself.
Like many Allen films. “Crimes
and Misdemeanors” is dry. hard to
follow, and somewhat depressing.
However, fans of Allen will appreci
ate this film; “Crimes and Misde
meanors” is among the writer/actor/
director's best work to date. This is
probably not a mainstream film; not
everyone is going to enjoy it, but
those who like it will probably love it.

But I was gone. I had cleared a

Before I could tum and head back

Now I was trapped in the middle of
