Nebraska, ranked No. 6 by Amateur Wres tling News, defeated Wyoming 28-8 in a dual last Friday, then won championships in seven of the 10 weight classes Saturday at the Wyo ming Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo. But, Neumann said, the intensity level ot the Huskcrs has been a question mark since last weekend’s competition. “We’ve wrestled semi-poor in practice,’’ he said. “The intensity level hasn’t been what we’d hoped, but the technique improvements arc coming along well.” Neumann said one reason for the lack of intensity has been lack of sleep by some of his team members. “A lot of guys get out of practice and go home and study all night,” he said. “Last week, they missed school Thursday and Fri day, and we’ll miss classes Friday this week. They’ve just been wrestling tired at practice. “I just told them they need to get some sleep, loo.” Improved technique, Neumann said, will be needed from the Huskers this weekend, when the Huskcrs travel to St. Louis for the St. Louis BEST from Page 13 compete for the team Saturday,” Allen said. ‘‘ He probably won’ t have his best meet, but his score will still be outstanding.” In addition to winning the all-around title at last year’s NCAA competition, Kirksey won three events en route to claiming the all-around title at last year’s Big Eight Championships. Steller placed fourth in the all-around at nationals and second in the all-around in the Big Eight. Warburton is a two-time Big Eight champion on the still rings and earned All America status on the parallel bars. Nebraska’s senior trio will be joined in the all-around by juniors Brad Bryan and Ted Dimas, and freshman Trent Dimas. Allen said he is pleased with his lineup. Invitational - the last open tournament ol the season, in which redshirts can compete without losing their redshirt status. “I anticipate a lot better performance, in tensity-wise, for this meet,” Neumann said. ‘‘With the competition we’ll be facing, we’ll need it.” That competition will include No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State, third-ranked Oklahoma, 15th-rankcd Notre Dame and 22nd-rankcd Wisconsin, among others. One of the toughest matches for Nebraska, Neumann said, will be at the 126-pound weight class. Nebraska’s Jason Kclbcr, ranked third in the nation at his weight, could wrestle top ranked Kendall Cross of Oklahoma State and second-ranked Chris Bolin of Oklahoma. Neumann said the most difficult aspect of the St. Louis Open is that the Huskers won’t face high-ranked wrestlers until the quarterfi nals. ‘ ‘ We have to get by some other people from other schools first,” he said. The St. Louis Open is important to Husker coaches because ‘‘it will show us exactly where our guys stand,” Neumann said. It also will provide a tuneup for the Las Vegas Tournament in two weeks, which Neu mann said is the most important national tour nament of the season before the NCAA Cham pionships. No team scoring will be kept during this weekend’s competition. ‘‘We have outstanding performers,” Allen said. ‘ ‘Not many teams have four guys that can score above 57 in the all-around like our three seniors and Trent Dimas. “We have a tremendous team. The coach ing staff is excited and the guys arc keyed up for the meet.” And a meet, Allen said, is what the team needs. “I honestly feel this year’s team could be the best ever,” he said. “But we need a meet. We need to perform. We need Christmas vaca tion under our belts. We need January to be here. “This could be the best, and we’ve had some good ones.” IT PAYS TO BE HEALTHY AT HARRIS!
