SOUTH from Page 10 pete with my precocious knowl edge of the roster for a while, Harry gave up and just used me as a talking roster. To our left sat Jean, a small old woman with beautiful white hair. I think she was one of the main reasons why my grandmother en joyed going to the games for so long. They were two of a kind. T he bigger the rout, they more they enjoyed the game. They didn’t like the close games because they didn’t like to get nervous, because they couldn’t stand up fast enough to catch the big plays and because I had to relay these play-by-play to them. Jean always brought me candy at halftime. Other than th 1 'only can remember was one couple who sat off to the right, but the only thing I can recall about them is that they worked for Char lie Thone’s campaign against Bob Kerrey, and they were very mad during the game after that election. We’d all pay for our silly voting, they said. Each year would go about the same as far as these relationships were concerned. Before kick-off of the first game, you had to catch up on births, deaths and marriages. Lots of pictures were passed. Dur ing the season, we all got the weekly updates. After the last home game, everybody promised to keep in touch during the off season this time, but it was usually the first game of the next season before anybody realized that they had forgotten to do so. But I was in school, I didn’t have to worry about things like keeping in touch, so at the end of each season I just said “see you next year,” and everyone always thought that was a funny thing to say. Now if I go to the game I sit in the student section, and my dad usually uses the South Stadium tickets these days. But I always try to make it over to the “old neigh borhood.” Last time I was there, Romey’sson had brought hiseight ot nine-year-old son, who, after J bad plays screamed “Shiiiiiiiiiii hit!” Jean apologized for not bring ing me candy. I was cramped by the overlapping seats in front of me. I was afraid to, but I knew I had to do it, so I did. I turned around. There was Romey, smiling a re ally wicked smile at me, pouring something out of his thermos. “How’s it goin’ Curtis?” he asked, handing me a cupofstraight orange juice. HUSKER BOB from Page 7 Football is not the only Ne braska sport Husker Bob follows. He makes sure to keep up on all of the university’s sports teams. "I don’t ha ve any favorite sports, they’re all favorites to me. I’m just a sportsman. I love sports,” he said. ‘‘I think Nebraska has a very good program. Bob Devaney started it all off.” Husker Bob expresses a special admiration for Nebraska coach Tom Osborne. “Tom Osborne, you can’t beat a person like Tom Osborne,” he said. “He’s a gentleman and a fine coach." And for fans who suggest Osborne is a mediocre coach be cause he can’t win “The Big One," Husker Bob has a special message. “Oh, I just think that’s a bunch of malarkey, dagrabbit,” he said. “That’s just the way the ball bounces. It’s just a thing that hap pens. There’s no better coach than Tom Osborne.” Still, in spite of his spirited loy alty to Nebraska, I lusker Bob finds | a higher level of dedication to his j country. “When the band starts playing the national anthem, it gives me J one of the greatest feelings,” the veteran of World War II said. “I just | gotta stand still and think about a j lot of my buddies when 1 was over | there. It’s what we used to listen to i every day, and I love to hear it before a football game. “It’s wonderful.” r----*----^ This coupon is worth I $40.00 for 2 donations in one week, new donors and repeat donors who have returned in 2 months. | Plus receive a punch card for the month of November to win prizes!! ‘Trip for 2 to Las Vegas * 19" Color TV* ‘Boombox * Cash * And More* Our fully automated donor center Is medically supervised by a friendly, professional staff.
