alities. In the come crayon sketch
“Portrait of Arthur Treacher,”
Nash succeeds in faithfully ex
pressing his subject’s strength of
character. A gouache and chalk
portrait of Eva Gardner is included
in the exhibition, as well as a por
trait of Rita Hayworth.
Nash’s oils are the strongest of
his works included in the exhibit
Among the most aesthetically sat
isfying are “Self Portrait in Zigzag
Sweater,’’ owing to the frank de
piction of its subject’s frank pose,
and the excellent portraits of
“Edith.” Nash’s portraiture is
analytical, and because of this the
personal communications of his
paintings tend to be “to” rather
than “with” the viewer, but this*«
no detriment — in the case of
Nash s painting it is very appeal
ing.
Not only a portraitist, Nash is
well known for his New Mexican
landscape paintings.
The Center for Great Piains
Studies Art Collection gallery is
open to the public free of charge
from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sun
day.
“Willard Nash: Portraits and
Self Portraits” will remain on dis
play until December 22.
HANNA from Page 6
ened but, in a perverse way, very
excited about my transformation into
the coolest rebel on campus. Seyeral
even asked me to autograph their
textbooks.
One awestruck young man asked
me if I’d sign his high school year
book so he could tell people we went
to high school together. I begrudg
ingly agreed. I wrote ...
“Dear wimp-face, you’re awfully
lucky to have known me. Now get
outta my face.’’
Then I signed it. I took a moment
to read over the poetic rebel beauty
that had flowed so effortlessly from
my pen. I was convinced that I was
now the most defiant, feared individ
ual on earth.
Then my world fell apart. As I
closed the yearbook, I received a
nasty paper cut along the webbing
between my index and middle finger.
Not just a tiny one - a real big one.
There was even a little blood.
I began to cry like a baby.
“Ow, ouchie, ouchie, ouchie,” I
said. “Oooh, that stings.”
My befuddled classmates looked
on befuddledly.
“Oh cripes! It’s a deep one.
Ouchie. I hope it doesn’t get in
fected.”
Tears were streaming down my
face and I was in the front of the room
dancing in circles as I held my af
flicted hand.
“Call the health center, I need
some iodine,” I wailed. “Oh, this
hurts so-o-o-o much!”
Suddenly I stopped, aware that the
entire class was roaring with laughter
at the sight of the coolest guy in
school crying over a paper cut.
My face grew red with shame. I
had blown it. I had the chance to be
the hippest cat ever to hit UNL and,
instead, I was now the biggest bawl
baby.
I quickly picked up my books and
ran out of the room. I sprinted to the
nearest bathroom and wept a river of
pain and humiliation. I indeed had
learned my lesson.
James had appeared to me to send
the message that it’s OK to be who
you are. You shouldn’t try to be
something that you’re not - it will
only bring you heartache. I love a
story with a message.
I dried my eyes, re-wet the gel in
my hair in order to re-set it to an
acceptable style and returned to class,
a wiser man.
