likely Masterson will win an Acad
emy Award for the film, her perform
ance as the level-headed Lucy Moore
is gripping and realistic. (She also has
a quite pleasant singing voice, evi
denced in her duet with Glenn Close,
on Van Morrison’s “Into the Mys
tic.”)
Close, of “Fatal Attraction” and
“Dangerous Liaisons,” strikes an
emotional chord with her portrayal of
Linda Spcctor. The vulnerable,
gentle way Close handles Linda is
admirable. Already nominated for
five Academy Awards in the past,
Close acquits herself well with this
film.
Woods is a veritable bastion ot
sympathy and strength. He is the
cheerleader character, dealing with
his problems by making them into
jokes. He seems to have perfected his
“It’ll be all right, dear’’ in this film.
His Rock of Gibraltar exterior breaks
noticeably during one scene in the
film, but in the next scene he’s back
to being his wife’s support system.
When he’s able to let his guard down,
it’s rather touching. Michael is the
type of guy most of us would want by
our side in a crisis.
Dillon’s character is oversimpli
fied. He docs, however, bring a
sweetness and a naivete to his charac
ter that is touching. Sam has a hard
time showing his feelings, and is
crazy about his girlfriend. He only
wants to have a career in music and to
stay devoted to Lucy for the rest of h is
life. His talk of making “contacts”
and meeting roadies is almost pa
thetic. Sam is an abrupt departure
from earlier Dillon characters — most
notably the violent Bunny of “Pla
toon” -- but works because of Dil
lon’s obvious dedication to the role.
Music is unobtrusive in this film,
thankfully, but Otis Redding's
“Motherless Children,” Van Morri- f
son’s “Into the Mystic” and *
Beethoven’s “Trio in E Flat Major,
Opus 3’’ add subtle shading to the
overall effect.

condiments that the burger is
somewhat enjoyable.
The receipt system. The theory
behind fast food is that it takes a
short amount of time to receive
meals after ordering. Burger King
does a pretty good job of getting
people in and out with their state
of-the-art system of ordering and
receiving.
First the food is ordered and
paid for and then the customer
receives a ticket and waits at an
other counter until his or her num
ber is read.
But the number on the receipt is
printed in dot matrix and is incredi
bly hard to read. Maybe this is why
the person at the counter tells each
customer what the number is. But
for those students who are in a
da/e, hung over or not listening, it
can be difficult to distinguish cer
tain numbers.
And when Burger King is busy,
it’s a waste of time to just order a
drink because you still have to go
through the process of receiving
the receipt and waiting for them to
call your number.
After adding up the pros and
cons Burger King is convenient
and more than tolerable.
