I PROGRESS from Page 10 the way the Huskcrs had improved since the beginning of the year. He said he also was pleased with their success. Nebraska finished its season with a 3-1-1 record. “We ended up with eight scholar ship guys on the freshman team and five of those were linemen,’’ Thorell said, “so it didn’t leave us with a lot of so-called ‘skill position’ players on the team. “But we have a real fine group of walk-ons and they really came through, guys like David Seizys « who’s a really good player with a lot of talent who I think is going to play here some day.’’ I BUFFS from Page 9 McCartney praised Nebraska’s defense. “We couldn’t run our option game effectively, because their free safety was down our throats,’’ Mc Cartney said. “All year long, when teams have done that to us, we threw the ball. But we couldn’t do that to day because of our inability to protect our quarterback.” But McCartney said Hagan’s athletic ability is what saved the Buffs. “I thought he did an absolutely terrific job out there today,” he said. “To have a quarterback like that - with his ability to improvise and Seizys — who finished the year as the leading receiver with nine catches tor 155 yards - was an important part "lc Hunkers’ ^me plan against Waldorf, ThorcII said. He was a guy we needed to get the ball to, Thorell said, “because he s probably as big a threat guy as we have.” Seizys said his performance against Waldorf made up for some trouble he had during the rest of the season. “This game was great,” said the 5-foot 8-inch, 166-pound freshman. All year I’ve kind of been hobbling the punts. I got the one today and the touchdown, so that really helped ... It was my birthday today (Friday), so that really added to it.” make something positive happen -- is a luxury most teams don’t have.” Colorado’s fans, McCartney said, were also a big factor in the win. He said he is pleased to see the entire community supporting the Buffs the way they have all season. “That student body wants to go to Miami as badly as we do,” McCart ney said. “I’ve seen a lot of stadiums, but I’ve never seen a crowd like that.” Hagan said it’s too early to be talking about the national champion ship, and maybe even too early to talk about the Orange Bowl. “When the Orange Bowl comes, we’ll talk about the Orange Bowl,” Thorell cited graduate assistant Jeff Jamrog’s job with the junior varsity linebacking corps as a reason for the team’s success. He said Daren Williams, a scholarship linebacker from Chicago, 111., was the team’s most-improved defensive player. Thorell, who is now 10-4-1 after three years as the junior varsity coach, said left tackle John Butala was the most-improved player on offense. “We’ve made a lot of progress .. . I think everyone improved over the course of the year,’’ Thorell said. “Finishing 3-1-1 is a fairly good season for us. “I feel good about the way they finished the season and, hopefully, a lot of these guys can go on to have a good future here.’’ he said. “For now, we’ve got two games remaining.” * Free safety Tim James, however, was ready to discuss New Year’s Day plans. “We’re going to Miami,’ ’ he said. “We knew that if our offense kept coming back, there was no way they were going to beat us.” Hagan said the victories against Oklahoma and Nebraska in the span of eight days were the “sweetest part of a sweet season.” “We’ve been on a mission all year,” Hagan said. “I don’t think we’re great right now. At the end of the season, we’ll talk about how great we are.” Lspoflts-_ Wrestlers prepare for 1989 season Nebraska’s Corey Olson made a strong bid to earn a starting job during the Comhusker wrestling team’s exhibition match Friday at Harvard. Olson pinned Tucker Thompson in the 177-pound competition. That performance was critical, as the 177-pound class was one of three in which starters had not been named. The other weights in which wrestlers were battling for starting positions were in the 118 and 158-pound classes. In the 118-pound competition, John Buxton decisioned Butch McFee 3-0 and Jim San chez decisioned Jeremie Eckley 3-2, while Dan Harrison decisioned Jamie Penning 7-2 in the 158-pound competition. Nebraska, which is ranked No. 6 by Amateur Wrestling News, opens its season Friday against Wyoming. The match begins at 8:30 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo. cooper among 1 norpe Award finalists Nebraska safety Reggie Cooper is one of 10 finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented annually to college football’s best defensive back. . Joining Cooper as finalists arc Missouri’s Adrian Jones, Michigan State’s Harlon Barnett, Arizona State’s Nathan LaDuke and Houston’s Alton Montgomery. Georgia Tech’s Ken Swilling, Michigan’s Tripp Welcoume, Notre Damers Todd Lyght, USC’s Mark Carrier and Fresno State’s James Williams also arc finalists. Changes planned for NU home games At least two changes await fans who attend Nebraska men’s basket ball games at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The first change involves the broadcast booth, where Larry Moehlenbrink will replace Kent Pavelka as the announcer for KFAB radio. Moehlenbrink currently provides sideline reports during Ne braska football games. The second change will involve the press, which will be moved from its current mid-level seating arrangement to tables at floor level. FOR SALE Cliff'* tor Gifts. Frew gift wrapping. 140 N. 12th.
