Coach says junior varsity finally in sync
By Cory Golden
Staff Reporter
Nebraska junior varsity coach
Shane Thorell talked like a high
school principal at graduation after
his team’s game against Waldorf
Junior College.
After Nebraska’s 41-7 win on Fri
day at Memorial Stadium, Thorell
said his team had gone through weeks
of not getting its offense and defense
together. But finally, he said, every
thing was in sync.
“We pul together a real good
game offensively and defensively,’’
Thorell said. “1 was real pleased with
that — that’s what we’ve been trying
to do all year.
“When you play only a five-game
schedule and they’re freshmen learn
ing the offense and defense for the
first time, it may take that long before
you start clicking.”
Nebraska took the opening kickoff
and used its running game to move 93
yards on 18 plays. Quarterback Joel
Cornwell capped the drive on a one
yard run that gave the Comhuskcrs a
7-0 lead..
Cornwell, who was held out of the
Huskcrs’ 40-16 win against Iowa
Central Junior College Sept. 20, pro
vided Nebraska with 133 yards of
total offense and three touchdowns.
The Nebraska defense held Wal
dorf to 129 yards rushing, and helped
the Huskers increase their lead when
comcrback Greg Salvo picked off an
Eric Sukup pass.
Marvin Callies, who started in
place of Cornwell two weeks ago,
stepped in at quarterback and led a
53-yard, 14-piay drive that gave
Nebraska a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Nebraska increased its lead to 21 -
0 early in the second half when
Cornwell scored on a five-yard
touchdown run and fullback Brian
Dunlavy scored on a two-yard run.
Dunlavy’s touchdown was set up
when wingback David Seizys re
turned a punt 39 yards.
Seizys then reached the end zone
himself when Cornwell hooked up
with the Seward speedster on a fly
pattern down the right sideline. The
51 -yard pass put Nebraska ahead 35
0 w ith 14:50 left in the fourth quarter.
Waldorf broke the shutout when
Sukup hit Art Schwarting on a 33
yard scoring strike, but Nebraska
responded by compiling a 13-play
drive that was capped by wingback
Brad Decker’s seven-yard run.
Thorcll said he was pleased with

LOSS from Page 9
“We just didn’t have a lot of
bounces go our way today (Satur
day),’’ Osborne said. “Those two
punt returns, and then that one Colo
rado punt that bounced 70 yards or so
are good examples.”
Nebraska center. Jake Young
agreed.
‘‘We just lost,” he said. ‘‘We
went out there and gave it everything
we had, and just came up short. That
about sums it up.
‘‘I was once told that great teams
make their own breaks. Colorado
made theirs today. I’m not biller
toward anybody, but nobody likes to
lose. Especially me.
‘‘When you play for the Com
huskers, you don’t have an attitude

that you’ll lose to anybody.”
Gregory said he didn’t think the
best team won.
“All the big things that could go
their way went their way today,” he
said. “They’re a good team, but I’d
like to play them again.”
Osborne said the loss raises ques
tions.
“I’m really anxious to see how we
bounce back,” Osborne said. “We
haven’t had a lot of adversity this
year, and now we’ve got that.
“It should be interesting.”
