lished in the United States.
Traditionally, Vietnamese
women were expected to serve the
men in their family, in the event of
their husbands’ deaths they would
have to serve their sons. Some of the
many expectations of the women
included cooking and sewing as well
as other household duties.
As the film progresses to show the
new Western Vietnamese society, the
role of women changes. They still do
household work but also enter the
work force. One woman interviewed
was a hydroelectric engineer in a
place where only two women were
employed, showing how well the
Vietnamese adapted to the West.
Two other films of Trinh T. Minh
ha will be shown this weekend.
“Reassemblage,” about the role of
women in Senegal, will be shown
Thursday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at
2:15 p.m. “Naked Spaces: Living is
Round,” also profiles West African
culture and will be shown following
“Reassemblage” Thursday and Fri
day at 7:30 p.m. “Surname Viet
Given Name Nam” will follow
“Rcasscmblagc” Sundayat2:15and
7:30 p.m. Trinh T. Minh-ha will be
bresent for discussions about her
films.
Naked Spaces’ featured at Sheldon
Film highlights African people, universe
By Gretchen Boehr
Senior Reporter
An unusual film capturing the
texture, color and sound of West
Africa will play at Sheldon Memo
rial Art Gallery Thursday and Fri
day.
“Naked Spaces: Living is
Round” is more than a documen
tary of African people. It illustrates
how universal elements such as
earth, sky and light are interrelated
with the African people and ele
ments of music and shelter.
The filmmaker makes the point
that African people and the uni
verse create a circle of life.
The use of voice-overs and
scenes where the natural sound
suddenly stops makes this film
unusual. It isn’t a typical tourist
documentary of tribal rituals and
children with swollen stomachs.
In this documentary, abstract
ideas arc left out for the viewer to
string into a poem.
The photography is taken at un
usual angles - through doorways
and other crevices. The camera
often rests on a bare foot or a face
for a moment and then a clay pot or
adobe house surrounded by trees,
grass and other Africans.
In one scene a'women’s voice
says that life is round and the circle
is the perfect form.
“Everything round invites
touch or caress.”
“Naked Spaces” also explores
the different styles of African
homes and their relation to people
and the universe.
“Houses and humans are both
made of small balls of earth.”
Those who enjoy films with lots
of scenery and an abstract study of
human nature won’t want to miss
“Naked Spaces.”
The film runs 135 minutes and,
though it is interesting, the beauti
ful photography and lack of dia
logue can have a somewhat cata
tonic effect on the viewer.
As well as a filmmaker, Trinh
T. Minh-ha is a writer and com
poser who lectures on feminism,
art and film. She presently is teach
ing cinema at San Francisco State
University.
She taught music at the Na
tional Conservatory of Music in
Dakar, Senegal for three years.
Her time in Africa inspired her
to shoot two films in West Africa -
“Reassemblage” in 1982 and
“Naked Spaces” in 1985.
“Naked Spaces” received the
Blue Ribbon Award for Best Ex
perimental Feature at the Ameri
can International Film Festival
and the Golden Athena Award for
Best Feature Documentary at the
Athens International Film Festival
in 1986.
“Rcassemblage” shreds the
tourist stereotypes of African
people. Trinh focuses on and ridi
cules social scientists of culture.
“Reassemblage” was exhib
ited at The New York Film Festi
val in 1983 and has toured the
United States with the Asian
American Film Festival.
Trinh has just completed an
other feature-length film, “Sur
name Viet Given Name Nam,” on
Vietnamese women and the his
tory of women resistance in Viet
nam.
“Naked Spaces” will play
Thursday at 7 p.m. with “Reas
semblage,” and Friday at 7:30
p.m.
Along with the Thursday eve
ning showing, “Reassemblage”
will play Sunday at 2:15 p.m. with
“Surname Viet Given Name
Nam.” “Surname Viet Given
Name Nam” also will play at 7:30
p.m. Sunday. Trinh will attend the
screenings to discuss her work
with the audiences.
