fflPROGRAM from Page 10 Khy is created by UNL dance faculty Hind visiting artists. The LCDT averages 12 perform ances a year. “We have amazing opportunities ■for students to perform,” Milan said. “Last year we were in production Hhc entire year.” The dance department also is af Hiliated with the community ballet Kompany called Ballet Midwcst-Lin Koln City Ballet Company. Thccom Hpany usually puts on a performance in Hhc spring in which the UNL dance Hcpartmcnt participates. On the academic side of the dance Hrogram, two degrees are offered to Ktudents at UNL - a bachelor of fine Htrts degree in dance and a bachelor of Htris degree. The bachelor of fine arts degree is Hor dancers who wish to perform Hrofcssionally or go on to graduate Kchool, Milan said. UNL does not offer a graduate Hcgree in dance. If students choose to go on to ■graduate school, they may earn a Hnastcr of art or a master of fine arts ■degree. UNL’s bachelor of arts degree ocuses more on a liberal arts educa ion instead of performing, Milan said. This major is for students who don t want to perform but want to teach dance, dance history and criti cism, or study kinesiology, she said. Some colieges allow dance stu dents to receive an undergraduate degree as a ballet major or modem dance major. At UNL the dance pro gram requires dancers to be profi cient in all styles, Milan said. “The type of degree received depends on the particular school,” she said. “We hav* training in all areas of dance and a student may decide on an area of concentration.” it’s important for a dancer to be proficient in all areas because profes sional dance companies arc no longer as segregated in particular dance styles as they used to be, Milan said. As in all the performing arts areas, it’s important for university dance programs to have faculty with profes sional dance experience. Milan said UNL has a very good mix of experi enced faculty. She has a masters of arts in dance and dance education from New York University and has performed profes sionally with a number of modem dance companies in New York. This is Milan’s third year at the university. The new program director will fill her position this spring. I' I KFMQ: Top Singles 1. Aerosmith, “Pump” 2. Rolling Stones, “Steel Wheels” 3.
