The Yellowjackets won the 1989 Jazz Fusion Grammy for “Politics.” The group also won a 1986 R&B Instrumental Perform ance Grammy for its 1986 release, “Shades.” The band’s new album, released by MCA records, is “The Spin,” an album group members call their most traditional jazz al bum yet. The group consists of four members: bassist Jimmy Haslip, keyboardist/composer Russell Feitante, saxophonist Marc Russo and drummer/percussionist Wil liam Kennedy. Haslip defined the musical mission of the Yellowjackets... “As a band, we’re trying to stretch out and give people that don’t know or understand jazz a chance, while growing and chal lenging ourselves,” he said. Russo agreed, adding, ‘‘We always push and pull at each other to try to get to the best of every song.” The Sunday shows will be the first time the Ranch Bowl has pre sented a jazz show, said Matt Markel, the Ranch Bowl’s owner. Shows will be at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets, which are on sale at the Ranch Bowl, are $12 in advance and $13 the day of the show. .. The members of the quartet will be giving a master class for UNL music students from 1 to 3 p.m Saturday. The cycle will continue in Febru ary, with performances by the Men delssohn String Quartet and lectures by Lewis Lockwood, and again in April, with performances by the Vermeer Quartet and lectures by Jo seph Kerman. Friday night’s show will feature Beethoven’s “Opus 18 No. 6” in E flat major, ‘ ‘Opus 74 ” in E flat major and “Opus 132“ in A minor.
