I-back forgets off-the-field problems,
leads NU junior varsity team to win
By Cory Golden
Staff Reporter
Nebraska I-back Lamont White is
having a strange year.
White, a sophomore who led
Nebraska’s junior varsity football
team to a 40-16 win against Iowa
Central Community College Friday
at Memorial Stadium by rushing for
87 yards on 13 carries, began his year
in a position to be the No. 3 I-back for
the varsity.
But White’s hopes were dashed
when he was suspended after plead
ing not guilty to charges of posses
sion of a controlled substance. The
charges stemmed from a vial of what
was believed to be cocaine that was
found in White’s car. White claimed
that the vial did not belong to him, but
to another man in the car.
Nebraska coach Tom Osborne
ended White’s suspension after Ne
braska’s season-opening win against
Northern Illinois. Osborne said
White had passed a voluntary poly
graph test and had passed all previous
drug tests.
White returned to varsity practice
but only saw action on three plays in
varsity games. His comeback effort
was then hampered by the return of I
back Terry Rodgers, who recovered
from a knee injury.
Rodgers moved into the No. 3 I
back spot behind Ken Clark and
Lcodis Flowers, moving White even
farther down the depth chart.
White said it was a combination of
his off-thc-field troubles and the var
sity’s depth that led him to join the
junior varsity.
‘‘I can play on varsity,” White
said. “But I had some off-the-field
troubles this year, so maybe that’s
why 1 am where I am.
“We have a lot of good backs on
varsity. They can only take a certain
amount and they already have their

complain. I’ll do what I can until I

Nebraska junior varsity coach
Shane Thorell said the opportunity
for White to play helped everyone
involved.
“Lamont did a good job,” Thorell
said. “He’s got more speed than our
other I-backs. It was a deal where
Lamont hasn’t been able to play a
whole lot on the varsity and he
wanted to play with us.
“I only had three I-backs, so I said
‘that’s fine.’ As it turned out, Shane
McClanahan got hurt in the first quar
ter, so we needed him.”
McClanahan’s strained knee liga
ment turned out to be the least of
Nebraska’s troubles, as the Huskers
turned the ball over seven times
against Iowa Central.
Nebraska quarterbacks Marvin
Callies and Jeff Lindquist each threw
two interceptions and the Huskers
lost three fumbles. But they still
managed to defeat the 5-2 Tritons.
“We kind of stunk the place up
offensively,” Thorell said. “I was
glad we could overcome a lot of turn
overs to end up winning the game.”
Depth was the key to the victory,
Thorell said.
“Iowa Central’s a good team that
plays hard,” he said. “They just
don’t have many bodies.”
Nebraska took a 7-0 lead when
Callies broke away on a 14-yard
touchdown run with 6:46 left in the
first quarter. The Tritons tied thr
score when they converted a Husker
fumble to seven points on a 4-yard
run by fullback Chuck Fitzgerald.
Iowa Central sacked Lindquist in
the end zone for a safety to take a 9
7 lead with 13:15 left in the second
quarter.
Nebraska’s defense, which
Thorell said had one of its best out
ings of the year, then shut down Iowa
Central and the Huskers regained the
lead on the first of two Tim Kehrct
field goals.
Kchret kicked 35- and 42-yard
field goals.
Nebraska took a 17-9 lead at
halftime when Lindquist found an
open David Seizys for a 27-yard scor
ing strike. The Huskers then pulled
away in the second half as they al
lowed only one Triton touchdown.
Nebraska scored on Kehret’s sec
ond kick, then Dan Pleasant scored
on a 40-yard pass from Callies to
make the lead 27-9.
lamip Wpvprc a vafpfv from
Humboll, recovered a blocked puni
in the end /one.
I-back Bob Wilkerson scored
Nebraska’s final touchdown on a 4
yard run. Kehrel missed the extra
point attempt.
The win improved the Huskers’
record to 2-1-1.
Thorell said Nebraska has yet to
put things together, but he still has
hope.
“We have signs of being a real
good team. We just haven’t put it
together yet,’’ Thorell said. “We’ve
got one more left, so hopefully we
can do it for that one.’’
Nebraska will close out its season
Nov. 3, when it faces Waldorf (Iowa)
Community College. The game be
gins at noon in Memorial Stadium.
