A relic of the rolling past can be
discovered right in Lincoln -- the
National Museum of Roller Skating.
Located at 7700 A St., it houses
the world’s largest collection of roller
skates and roller skating memora

in existence, it is a non-profit organi

Consisting of about 20 display
cases, the museum is basically a one
room tour. One can walk through this
maze of displays and follow a time
line of roller skating history.
“Roller skating popularity goes in
cycles but we always go back to it,”
said Barbara Sorenson, director and
curator of the museum. * ‘Right now it
is on an upswing.”
Sorenson said the museum aver

The museum, founded in 1980,
opened in Lincoln because of the
city’s central location and rollerskat

Although it was created by five roller
skating associations, the museum is
separate from them.
According to Sorenson, the differ
ent associations represent about 40
million skaters, both recreational and
competitive.
The museum traces the techno
logical evolution of the roller skate
and the history of its athletes, person
