Softball teams to vie for shot at MTV trip j Andy Manhart/Daily Nebraskan By Mark Lage Senior Reporter_____ Two nameless, recently as sembled softball teams, composed of UNL students, will battle it out Satur day night, the winning members get ting a shot at one free trip to Los Angeles to watch MTV’s “Rock ‘n’ Jock Diamond Derby.’’ Melissa Keitges, MTV’s Univer sity of Nebraska-Lincoln campus representative in the Campus Activi ties and Programs office, took sub missions of ten-member softball teams, and on Oct. 12 two were drawn to play in the game. Twenty five teams were entered in the draw ing, Keitges said. One of the selected teams is made up of six members of Acacia Frater nity, and four of that fraternity’s little sisters, said Mikki Mahar, one of the team members. Mahar is a sopho more news-editorial major. In addi tion to Mahar, the team members arc: Melissa Pollman, Kip Naninga, Mike Jensen, Shelly Stewart, Brian Herbin, Kathy Kuntz, Mike Riddle, Greg Lien and Monty Greek. The team’s names were submitted on the “spur of the moment’’ by Herbin, Mahar said, and they have not practiced at all for the game. “We’re just going to go out and play,” she said. But they will do their best to win the game, Mahar said. William Peterson, a senior finance major, said the other team is not af filiated with any organization, being just a group of friends who decided to form a team for the drawing. The other team members are: Dave Herdman, Jim Langcnbcrg, Daryl Jahn, Trish Hodoly, Gina Bc nak, Scott Larsen, Morgan Manual, Peggy Darrow and Kale Ryan. This team is similar to the first in that it has no name, but it may have an advantage due to the fact that the members had a practice Wednesday and plan on having one more before game day. The game will be Saturday at 5 p.m., at the fields at 18th and Vine streets. After seven innings of slow pilch softball, the ten names of the winning team will be placed in a hat, and one name will be selected for the grand prize trip to Los Angeles, Kcilges said. UNL’s winner then will join 19 other winners from college campuses across the country for the free trip to Los Angeles to watch the “Rock ‘n’ Jock Diamond Derby.” The Derby will be a softball game comprised of rock stars and major league baseball stars who will com pete in a game for the benefit of the T.J. Martcll Foundation, which raises money for cancer research.
