Dallas, Cotton Bowl may give IN U tans
consolation if Colorado wins Big Eight
By Paul Domeier
Staff Reporter
Dallas may be the destination for
those Nebraska fans who have their
vacation money saved up, wailing for
the outcome of the Nebraska-Colo
rado game to decide where to go for
New Year’s Day.
Nebraska has not been to the Cot
ton Bowl since 1980, when it dropped
a 17-14 decision to Houston. With
Oklahoma and Nebraska ruling the
Big Eight since then, Cotton Bowl
organizers were reluctant to take the
conference runner-up because the
Sooners face Texas at the Colton
i-*-1
Bowl every fall.
That meant if Nebraska beat the
Sooners, with the loser going to the
Cotton Bowl, Oklahoma would have
made a second trip to Dallas, possibly
for a rematch with the Longhorns.
The Southwest Conference cham
pion receives an automatic berth in
the Cotton Bowl.
The NCAA has taken care of that
problem this season by putting Okla
homa on probation. Meanwhile, the
Buffaloes have joined the Com
huskers at the top of the Big Eight.
Barring an upset, the Ncbraska
Colorado game Nov. 4 will decide
who goes to the Orange Bowl and
who goes somewhere else. Jim
Brock, executive vice president of
the Cotton Bowl, said Dallas is look
ing to be that someplace else.
“Nebraska is always a viable
candidate for any bowl,” he said.
Brock had only good things to say
about Nebraska.
“Three of the most delightful
experiences we have had have been
with the University of Nebraska,”
Brock said.
He said the community and local
merchants love to bring the Huskers
and their fans to town.
A Colton Bowl official will be in
Stillwater, Okla., Tor the Nebraska
Oklahoma State game Saturday, he
said. Another will be at the Colorado
Kansas game. Brock said it’s obvious
which teams the officials will be
concentrating on because Oklahoma
State is also on probation and bowls
are not interested in Kansas.
The Jay hawks, who were 1-10 last
season, are off to a 2-4 start. Included
in their losses was a 24-20 setback to
the Iowa State Cyclones.
Brock said the Cotton Bowl is
sending representatives to only three
other games this weekend.
Nebraska athletic director Bob
Devaney said the Fiesta Bowl and the
Freedom Bowl also are sending rep
resentatives to Stillwater.
He said he has received generic
fliers from a number of representa
tives, but he hasn’t had formal com
munication with any bowl represen
tatives. Last week was the first week
visits by representatives were al
lowed.
Devaney said all the New Year’s
Day bowls arc attractive. Nebraska
only rates them financially, he said. If
the team has a choice between bowls
on the selection day -- which is Nov.
25 this year — the players gel to pick
their destination.

what they need. Look at last season’s
showcase double-header against
eventual national champion Texas.
Nebraska was swept by the Long
horns in the first match, but came
back to win in five games the next
night.
The split gave the Huskers the
right to say they defeated the
NCAA’s best, and Texas gained
valuable experience in preparation
for its title run.
This year’s feature can do the
same thing, even if Pettit didn’t plan
it that way.
TWo matches at home against the
top-ranked team arc perfect for the
fans and perfect for the program.
If Nebraska takes one match from
Hawaii, the Huskers will show they
can compete with the premier teams
on the West Coast.
If the Huskers sweep, it will be
another hint that they arc on their
way to the Final Four.
