African music h*& made big waves
n the western pop music world re
cntly, as seen m music by Paul
S imon and Peter Gabriel, and the real
thing will be splashed on to the Kim
ball Recital Hall stage tonight at &
The performance, endued Afro
Pop, will feature the New African
Music Project comprised of Thomas
MapfumoandThe Blacks Unlimited,
out of Zimbabwe, and Sekou Diabate
and Ben.beys Jazz National, from
Guinea.
Diabate, with tour manager Jody
Boulting serving as interpreter, said
the main difference between his
brand of West African musk and
American sock is the relationship
between die guitars. While American
sock usually features a unified grits*
African music uses guitar
more like the muric of

The rhythms and timings also are
different, he said. In West African
music, the bassist and drummer me
key, because they keep the beat
going. he said.
The main problem with bring a
musician in Guinea is the shortage of
good equipment, Diabeie said. Only
the churches have grand pianos, and
the inch of foreign currency in
Guinea makes is difficult to get qual
ity Western electronic instruments,
he said.
Diabate described himself and
Bembeya Jazz International as a
complete mixture of music, with a
base in jazz. He said that yaz origi
nated in Guinea, and comes from the
traditional stories and folklore of that
region. He also listens to rock, blues
and soul.
"His music is typically African
and specifically from Guinea," said
Laye Kabine Kame, Diabase's sound
engineer. "His songs are based on
peace, love and social problems. He
is calling peoples’ consciences to pull
together. .__

Mapfumo said, and they play the
"traditional music of people from
Zimbabwe, born out of the liberation
straggle."
"The sound is heavy," he said,
"and the music is also dancetble."
Before coming into his current
style, Mapfumo grew up playing rock
‘n’ roll, jazz and soul, but eventually
realized that he was chasing after the
wrong types of music. He was play
ing music that didn't mean anything
to him or to his culture, he said.
"Now 1 play music my people
understand,” he said.
Mapfumo said he likes to listen to
music that has a good message. \
"I'm a reggae fanatic," he said.
. Madey, like Diabate, is a big*
Beatles fan, he said.
