BAND from Page 9 their expectations. / When asked about influences, the bwj members said, literally, "eve Pentea said the band spends a great deal of time listening to records, watching new music shows like MrV’sT‘12t) Minutes," and listen ing to college radio. Specific favorite bands mentioned were The Beastie Boys, Prince, The Cure, and Indigo Pentes said that "Monster" is more of a group effort than its previ ous album, "Galaxy 500." "We wanted to write together for this album," she said. The last album was written almost completely by Nicholls, Pitkin, and Femes, but for "Monster," the band took more time to write the songs as an entire group, Pentes said. The fact that Stasium went difough a pre-production process with the tend also was different, Stewart said. This gave band mem bers an objective opinion on the •pngs before they started recording, Stewart said. '‘He helped us to shave out some of the excess,” he said. Monster” is in large part a result of the displeasure the tend felt with . 500” in its finished form, Nicholls said. “I’m totally happy with the vocai sound on this record, she said. “It’s what 1 sound like in my own head. And'the record sounds like what we want to hear live.” When Nicholls was asked about her process and inspiration for writ ing lyrics, she jokingly replied - u s a channeling process. I set up amethyst crystals, sulphur and in cense. Don Henley is at die other end of the channel.” "But seriously," she said, “I’m really inspired by everything. Being alive, having a good day, or having a bad day. It's just my means of com municating publicly, so I write lyrics about everything." Nicholls saidthat Fetchin' Bones’ music is "heavier" than a lot of cur rent college music. She added that she would compare tne band with some of the louder college bands, like The Replacements. Stewart had another way to look at it "I see a strum versus riff dichot omy in rock music," he said. "Some college bands'just pick a bunch of chords and strum forever. We riff." The band currently is touring in the Northeast, and will be working through the Midwest in November, when they’ll ‘‘hopefully’’ hit Ne braska, Nicholls said. REVIEW from Pa$s 3 interesting, and Duma Rentes shows competence and some dexterity on bate in the song “Mr. Bad/* “Love Crushing** and “Bonework,’’ also are solid, muscular rock songs. “Monster** is at its worst on “Say The Word” and “Spot/* which, owing to. bad keyboards and bad backing vocals, sound a little more like commercials than songs. In other places, where due tend backs down a bit for slower, subtler songs like “Deep Blue,** or “Cross/* the results are better, and the influences less direct But even these songs sound more like the stan dard emerging alternative pop of the last few years than anything this band has done itself. This is probably the most disturb ing factor of “Monster” - in its en ■ ■Mill ■■■! ———IMII II ■!!I IMTh II tirety, it sounds more like an amalga mation of the newest records by The Cult, RJB.ML and The Replacements, than any of the previous Fetchin’ Bones albums. Tire above hands have received much applause from critics and fans for coming out of their respective dooms, glooms and garages,Wit’s time to start realizing that while the new trends may result in good initial impact rock V roll, in the long run they have inspired homogeneous ness, and blandness. The example .here is simple - a few years ago, there was absolutely no danger of anyone confusing The Cult’s “Love,” with Fetchin' Bones’ “Bad Pumpkin” or “Cabin Floun der.” But in the spaces when Nicbolls is not singing, “Monster” easily could be mistaken for “Sonic Temple.” Nettt&kan Classified 472-2588 np>.
