FIFTH from Page 6 area (Rolling Stone, April 20, 1989). One must wonder if the in tentions of performers always are pure. Ask current top-40 heavy-metal bad boys Guns n’ Roses, who sing “Immigrants and faggots/ They make no sense to me/ They come to our country/ And think they’ll do as they please/ Like start some mini-Iran/ Or spread some f... ing disease" in the song “One in a Million." The band later was the first to volunteer for a New York City AIDS benefit. The band's offer was declined (Rolling Stone, April 20, 1989). Whether the band’s offer was a sick joke, an exercise in hypocrisy or indica tive of a changed attitude is left to the reader. Not all such activity is sus pect. The same issue of Rolling , stone reported the participation •of Maaonna and Sandra Bernhard in a benefit dance-a thon for AIDS Project LA. . A final question remains: Can all this concern and care, preten tious or otherwise, amount to anything when conveyed through music? If not, it would seem to be an ehormous exer cise in hitility on behalf pf musi dans. Such doubts are justified. Af ter all, the impact of mere words in a song cannot be too great. Any image or idea, no matter how striking, will fade sooner or later. And any passion, however strongly felt, aft too easily is lost. Ultimately, music can suc ceed in introducing or spreading awareness about political issues. But its ability to impart lasting ' change in the listener is limited. We are people of short atten tion spans ana quickly passing concerns. A song or appearance by a musician may get us inter ested in an idea, but that idea quickly fades unless we as the audience capture some of the performer’s passion. Perhaps that is for the best. Were our attitudes too easily in fluenced by others, nightmare visions of state control would gain substance. Our very resis tance to change has its saving graces as well as its condemning complacency. Tnat is wny it is essential that some musicians continue to dabble in political issues. Misin formed or full of idealistic pas sion as they may be, musicians have our attention and can open our eyes as well as our cars. Therestisuptous. I- DR.
