played in the foyer and four galler
ies of the second floor corridors
overlooking the courtyards.
"They represent people with
significant roles in the history of
Nebraska," he said.
The Nebraska Hall of Fame
Commission started adding the
busts in the early 1960s, he said.
The outdoor statue of Lincoln
was created 10 years before the
capitol, Ripley said.
"It was commissioned by the
citizens of Lincoln to commemo
rate the namesake of the city of
Lincoln."
Lincoln was named after former
president Abraham Lincoln, he
said.
MARXHAUSEN from Page 5
and a blueprint of the new capitol.
To the right is the vision of the new
capitol. The inscription in the
middle is from the rotunda and is
included “because I liked it” The
colorful shapes below the inscrip
tion are flowers.
"They symbolically represent
the building,” he said. “It’s like a
bed of flowers. It isn’t just a build
ing; it’s a beautiful building.”
Each mosaic took about six*
months to design and construct.
Marxhausen said that they were cut
into 50 puzzle pieces for easier
transportation. When installing
them onto the capitol walls, he
drilled holes and screwed each
piece in.
During the year or two of his
work on the murals, Marxhausen
taught all the art classes at Concor
—.. _
dia College and worked on the
mosaics in his spare time.
“I was really honored to be
chosen because there were a lot of
well-known mo&aicists. I couldn't
believe I was a part of it,” he said.
‘‘After it was done, I built a little
bridge above it and I welcomed the
people of the community to come
and walk over the murals for the
capital."
‘‘Looking back, it was really a
once in a lifetime situation,” he
said. “I know it was the highlight of
my life to be a part of this.”
In the years since he designed
the murals, he has spent his life
experimenting. He now devotes
most of his time to creating sound
sculpture and the rest to teaching
once a week, doing workshops on
creativity and making people feel
good. But that’s another story.
This was the first sculpture of
Lincolp done by Daniel Chester
French who went on to create the
seated figure for the Lincoln Me
morial in Washington D.C.
Henry Bacon, who later de
signed the building for the Lincoln
Memorial at Washington D C., cre
ated the foundation for the Lincoln
statue at the Nebraska capitol.
“It’s a very significant piece of
public art,” he said.
Ripley said the capitol is inte
grated in one master plan of art
work, architecture and landscape.
The whole capitol tells the story
of Nebraska, he said.
