With that statistic, the group hopes to convince UNL administrators that recycling would be profitable for the university, Zank said. J. Burger, projects coordinator for Ecology Now, said that along with the environmental benefits of recy cling, the savings that could be gener ated should convince university offi cials that implementing a recycling project is feasible. From June 1988 to July 1989, 112,582 beverages in aluminum cans, amounting to 4,690 pounds, were sold in the union, Burger said. At the current rate of 45 cents a pound for any amount or aluminum more than 200 pounds, UNL could have saved $2,110.50 by recycling all cans sold, he said. Although 100 percent retrieval would be nearly impossible, Burger said, publicity could gamer up to 50 percent of aluminum cans sold in the union. That would result in a savings of more than $ 1,000, he said. Recycling also could save UNL money by reducing the amount of garbage it sends to the landfill, which would reduce tipping fees, Burger said. UNL paid S21,935.40 in tipping fees last year to dispose of 5,511,300 tons of garbage, he said. That figure doesn’t include a $2 per-cubic-yard charge for disposing compacted waste, which comes from fewer than five buildings on campus, he said. Zank said UNL administrators should look for any way to reduce the high costs of garbage disposal. ?f “It just makes sense to recycle, he said. “When you look at where we’re going in the world and all these things that are contributing to our waste stream, it just makes sense. Burger said the waste audit will require cooperation from everyone in the union. Sorting through all of the union s waste to determine which products are recyclable would “not be a fea sible thing,” Burger said. “There’s too much garbage gen erated for people to do that, he said. To conduct an accurate audit of recyclable products, he said, Ecology Now is relying on people in the union to use designated receptacles. But getting people to comply isn’t easy, Burger said, because people tend to be apathetic. “We’re only one species, but that’s hard to get across to some people,” he said. “Anthropocen trism is what it is. It’s human chau vinism . . . thinking we’re the only species on the planet that matters.” Anthropocentrism, the thought that man is the central fact or final aim of the universe, usually is caused by apathy, Burger said. “I’ve run into people that ask what recycling is,” he said. “They don’t know what recycling is, and when you tell them they think that it’s disgusting to have to take the trash and have to separate it.” Zank said recycling is very easy if people will ‘ ‘get organized and sepa rate their trash when it’s generated.” Apathy also could become a prob lem in finding volunteers to help with the recycling program, Zank said. Ecology Now needs volunteers to collect and weigh the recyclable waste every night throughout the audit, he said. Finding enough people willing to do that has been difficult, he said. Zank said he hopes the audit con vinces UNL administrators to begin a recycling program because Ecology Now members don’t have enough time to conduct the project alone. Burger said a good way to find workers to pick up and weigh the recyclable products would be to use work-study students. But that can only be accomplished with help from the administration, he said. Burger said that until the admini stration gets behind the project, a few members of Ecology Now will con tinue to be “swamped” with work on the recycling project. If administrators do pledge their support, he said, Ecology Now mem bers can go ahead with the rest of their plans for campuswide recycling bin installation and implementing a similar recycling project throughout Lincoln. Beginning the recycling project has been difficult, but extending it after the audit is completed should be easier, Burger said. “I look at it as we’re very, very young now, and we re learning to walk here, and we expect to fall fiat on our faces at first,” he said. “But we’ll learn from that because falling on your face doesn’t feel very good. So, we’ll be ready to gel on with it. “It’s just the beginning.’’ PARKING from Page 1 claimed were unused. If there is a problem with empty faculty parking spaces, some will be changed to stu dent stalls, Blaha said. About two-thirds of the available parking spaces are allotted to stu dents and one-third to faculty and staff, Burke said. He said the alloca tion of lots between students, faculty and staff is fair. “I think we need to look at what we have now and improve it,’ ’ Burke said. The open session Monday was called because the parking office received hundreds of complaints from students, Burke said. He said parking problems have been worse this year than in past years, but he’s satisfied with the outcome of the meeting. 7 don’t agree with the complaint that there isn’t suffi cient parking.' - Biaha “The students did a good job of presenting their concerns,’’ he said. “I think it was beneficial to both sides.’’ “The students’ concerns were heard and will be taken into consid eration,” Hauberg said. John Goebel, vice chancellor for business and finance at UNL, said the Parking Advisory Committee always has been very responsive to student and faculty needs. He said the committee felt the need for an open session to get stu dent reactions and to deal with die issues that were raised. “The administration has always viewed parking as a serious prob lem,” Goebel said. Coffey said students who want to express their views can speak during open sessions at the bimonthly meet ings of the parking committee. The next meeung will be Monday in the Nebraska Union at 2:30 p.m. AIDS from Page 1 ers made from camera-ready models from the “America Responds to AIDS” campaign by the Centers for Disease Control. The four posters contain AIDS prevention messages and will be displayed at different times during the year, Nellis said. She said the task force cur rently is seeking co-sponsor ship from the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska for the pamphlet and poster projects. If ASUN agrees to cc-spon sor the projects, she said, its endorsement w ould be included on all pamphlets and posters developed through the projects. ASUN Speaker Correy Trupp said the senate will dis cuss co-sponsorship of the proj ects within the next few weeks. ! CASH prize’s I HOMECOMING TALENT SHOW 1 OF THE CENTURY 1 A [ iifflk AUDITIONS !
