Think, then write Lisa Donovan and Carol Grell (Daily Nebraskan, Sept. 25), let’s think about college for a while. Our first reason for being here (although a great many students, I admit, do not seem to realize it) is to get an educa tion. Along with learning classroom studies, one must also agree that a college education cannot be com plete without interaction with mem bers of the society that this institution of ours creates. Now, Lisa, even if you are not in a sorority, which I am not sure if you are or not, you must realize that these social events (“perpetuations of sex ism,” as you so deftly put it) are, in fact, more than an excuse for the males of the greek system to exploit, gawk at and drool over the women of the greek system. The social events that occur throughout the year are very opportunistic occasions for interaction between not only males and females of the greek species, but for all who find themselves com pelled to participate in any way what soever. Next, as to your feelings about the exploitation of women in these con tests, it seems to me that, unless you happened to personally be one of the women who has been exploited, you really should not be offended that a certain few women in our society are proud enough of their physical ap pearances to allow themselves to be photographed, in any manner, and displayed to the general public so that, they, too, may appreciate the beauty of this thing we call the human body. On the other hand, if you are one of the women who have personally been exploited, it cannot have happened without your consent (otherwise, how could these photographs have been obtained), and once again, you really should not be offended because it is on your own agreement that these photos were taken and displayed. Now, Carol, you have presented a very strong statement, and I agree that the prevention of disease and unwanted pregnancies falls to both partners. Women have traditionally been concerned with birth control pills, IUD’s and the like, but we’re talking about condoms here. First of all, condoms arc effective in the pre vention of pregnancy and disease, while pills, IUD’s and the like arc geared specifically toward preg nancy prevention. Now I pose to you this question: Is it fair that the prevention of preg nancy be shared by both partners, and the prevention of sexually transmit ted diseases be the responsibility solely of the male? If you are truthful in answering this, you must realize that it is not too much to ask that women know how to properly utilize the benefits of the condom. On the other side of the coin, if the Daily Nebraskan were to print an article on the proper insertion of IUD’s, foams, or other “female” contraceptives, I personally would find it very interest ing and educational. Finally, I would like you to realize two things: First, “accepting respon sibility for contraception and disease control” is something that must be shared, discussed and acted upon by both partners. As for taking a moment to think about actions and take con trol of hormones and et cetera, re member always that “it takes two to tango.” Second, there is a difference be tween sexism and sex. No one that I can think of is in favor of sexism except those who are not quite .in their own minds, but anyone who is against sex is against one of the greatest expressions of emotion available to our species (and I will not hesitate to mention that, when done properly, it feels damned good). Please think. Mark Gifford sophomore journalism Zsa Zsa censured In response to Jim Williams’ letter (DN, Sept. 25), I felt compelled to write. In fact, Zsa Zsa Gabor is the most noxious representative of the bourgeoisie I can personally think of off the top of my head. To refer to her as oppressed is a fundamental warp ing of reality. Maybe she won’t be able to buy another diamond neck lace tomorrow, because she’s in jail? Boo Hoo! Punish all bourgeois crimi nals. Scott Dyer1 philosophy sophomore Cyclists need laws • It never fails. After I wake up in the morning and am on my way to my 8 a.m. class every day, stumbling down the side walk on a trek to Andrews Hall, I’m accosted by the same situation. * ‘Cowabunga!” is the death cry I hear coming from the lips of a psy chotic bicyclist. And I sec before me a Schwinn all-terrain bicycle heading toward me at full force and somehow taking up the entire sidewalk. Several students are plowed over before anyone can really react. When realism of the situation finally hits, a large man in a cheap taffeta suit with a red power lie pushes a woman and her baby carriage out of the way just in the nick of time. And still the cyclist pursues. There I stood, frozen, not able to move as the man of mammoth proportions rolled over me, leaving tread marks all the way from my toe jam to my dandruff. And all I was left with was the memory of the click-click-clicking from the playing card that was clothcspinncd to the spokes of his wheel. That sound haunts me still today. I realize this is kind of an exag geration, but you have to admit you’ve seen something similar. These bicyclists are out of control and I think there should be some rules governing the sidewalks. In reality, the other day I saw three women get plowed over without so much as a ‘‘Scuse me.” Richard Allen senior life studies Including 15 types of sandwiches and a variety of I salads.
