Outstanding bands to play at festival I
By Mick Dyer
Staff Previewer
With some outstanding national
and local acts playing at the upcom
ing Haymarket Festival, as well as
another banner line-up of musicians
at local bars, good live music will be
in no short supply in Lincoln this
week.
Tonight, Such Sweet Thunder and
the Acorns will play at Duffy’s Tav
ern, 1412 O SL
Such Sweet Thunder, a solid alter
native rock band that plays sounds
reminiscent of Guadalcanal Diary,
the Connells and Chronic Town-era
R.E.M., has been popular in Kearney
for a long time. The band's popularity
is spreading.
Such Sweet Thunder has put out
several independently produced
tapes, as well as appeared in the last
edition of Broadside, a local alterna
tive music and art magazine and tape
compilation.
The Acorns, a dynamic alternative
band from Omaha, are always full of
musical surprises and lots of energy
on stage. At any rate, it’s nearly
impossible to sit still when it plays, if
you’re not on your feet dancing al
ready. Thoroughly enjoyable alterna
tive rock.
Also tonight, Mamou will play at
the Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St. What
would it sound like if Jimi Hendrix
had played the fiddle? Probably like
Mamou. Playing a powerful blend of
musical styles, Mamou effortlessly
cranks out traditional rollicking
caiun rhythms with a hellfire rock ‘n’
roll spirit. Hot stuff.
Thursday through Saturday, Rival
will play at Bash Riprocks, Upper
Level, 240 N. 12th St.
Also Thursday, the Tablerockers
will play at the Zoo Bar.
Friday, Guerilla Theatre will play
at the Brass Rail, 1436 O St. Playing
mostly covers of popular reggae,
blues and funk standards, Guerilla
Theatre is an entertaining dance-ori
ented band.
Friday and Saturday, the Wild
I.Q.’s will play good-time rockabilly
music at Chesterfield’s, Lower
Level, 245 N. 13th Si
Also Friday and Saturday, Eddy
Clearwater, a flamboyant showman,
known to change his outrageous cos
tumes several times a night, will play
at the Zoo Bar. A fine musician,
known for his distinct blend of Chuck
Berry duck-walking and Magic
Slam-influenced West Side blues,
Clearwater easily could be consid
ered the James Brown of the blues.
Anyway, Clearwater is a versatile
and colorful musician and it’s always
a treat to see him perform.
' Also Friday and Saturday, Back
lash will play at the Mountains Bar
arid Grill, 311 S. 11th St.
Friday through Sunday a whole
slew of fine locally and nationally
acclaimed musicians will give free
performances at the Third Annual
Haymarket Festival.

to the band’s smooth reggae sounds.

-Wayne Toups and Zydecajun
