NU tackle doesn’t mind change, or starting! By Jeff Apel Senior Editor Nebraska’s Erik Wiegert, who has spent his entire Comhusker career moving around, has a new home. Wiegert, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound sophomore from Fremont, will make his first career start Saturday when Nebraska faces Utah. He admitted Monday that he will be a little nerv ous while he fills in for All-America selection Doug Glaser at right tackle. Glaser suffered a toe injury during Nebraska’s 48-17 win against North ern Illinois and is expected to miss the next four to six weeks. Wiegert said Glaser’s injury caught him by surprise. “I had hoped to play a lot,” Wieg ert said, but you really can’t expect a starter to go down.” "Ho knows what's -Tenoplr Wiegert said he is looking forward to starting even though the first two years of his Nebraska career were spent moving all across the line. Wiegert started at left tackle for the 1987 Nebraska freshmen, then spent last season as a guard while redshirting. He then played guard and tackle during spring practice. Wiegert said he doesn’t mind changing positions. He said the key to making a successful transition is playing aggressive, smart football. “You have to be aggressive,’’ Wiegert said, “(but) it doesn’t matter how aggressive you are if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Nebraska offensive line coach Milt Tenopir said Wiegert proved he knew what he was doing against Northern Illinois. He said Wiegert played well even though he made three or four mental errors. Tenopir said Wiegert is a smart player. “He knows what’s going on,” Tenopir said. “He’s got his head about him. He’s a pretty level-headed kid’’ Tenopir said the Nebraska coach ing staff decided to have Wiegert concentrate on the tackle position because it felt it was “gypping him a little bit’’ by moving him around. But Tenopir said that doesn’t mean Wiegert will stay at the tackle position. “He’s a tackle now,’’ Tenopir said, “but that doesn’t mean a year from now we won’t adjust him.’’ Wiegert said he will not mind changing again. He said he also will not mind starting. “I’m definitely looking forward to it,” Wiegert said. usausiCTssTr” pipes bunt, leaving the club house and grandstand area short on water. Skold said he does not warn to see a repeat of 1987 this yea . ‘‘We’ve got our fingers crossed,” Skold said. “We’re hoping we can get a break.” Skold said the State Fair Park will be bolstered by tree general admission and inter state simulcasing. He said the track plans on spicing up its live program by simulcasting the Breeders Cup senes. Skold said the track also will be bolstered by the presence of R.D.
