BPage 20 ing end of the quar will be will be junior Bruton, a prcscason candidate. Bruton i last season, i of the biggest prob II and the rest of the s depth at wide re scholarship receiver - is listed on the Ti the success through id greatly on incom Missoun signed seven wide re ceivers to supplement the talents of Pointer, including junior-college transfer Damon Mays. Craig Paterra, I a 6-foot, 179-pound converted quar terback, is expected to help wherever needed in the Tigers’ receivers roster, and Linzy Collins, the top junior col lege receiver in the nation last season, also will see playing time. . y^cn the Tigers decide to run,' depth won t be a problem. Missouri returns live running backs who gained more than 1(X) yards in 1988, plus five other lettermen. At fullback, Tommie Stowers re turns for his senior season. Stowers, a -.7, 225-pounder, led Missouri in rushing last year with 667 yards. When Stowers isn’t carrying the ball, he’ll be blocking for tailback Michael Jones, who rushed for 463 yards last season. Jim White and Smiley Elmore will challenge Jones for playing time. One ot Stull’s biggest concerns is replacement, while Brian Reeves will return to his starting position on the other outside spot. On the inside, linebacker Darren McDonald will return to anchor the middle. McDonald compiled 90 tackles last season and is only 67 tackles from breaking Missouri’s career record. The other inside linebacker spot will be filled by either Tom Reiner or Ron Walters. The defensive line returns both tackles. Kevin White, a 6-4, 267 pound senior will play opposite Lee Johnson, who recorded 63 tackles last season, including 10 for losses. At middle guard, Tim Burke and Jeff Harper are expected to battle for the Tigers’ offensive line. Guards Pete Scott and Jay Greenwood return, but arc backed up by inexperienced players. At center, freshman Brad Funk and senior Jeff Gardener will com pete for the starting job, while the tackles probably will be Don Wright, a 6-4, 245-pound senior, and Andy Lock, 6-3, 275, who started last sea son for Missouri. Defensively, Missouri returns seven starters. A.J. Miller, another SMU transfer, suffered a knee injury during the spring game, and his ca reer likely is over. Because of his loss, Stull said, Missouri is left short handed at that position. Jerold Fletcher and Stacey Elliott will challenge to become Miller’s the starting role. Adrian Jones returns tor his final season at left comerback. Jones, a Playboy prescason All-America se lection, made 72 tackles last season, and has led the Big Eight twice in interceptions. His 14 career pickoffs tic him for the school record. Otis Smith, also a starter last sea son, returns, but this time at left cor ncrback. He played strong safety last season, where Ted LcPagc and Harry Colon will compete to replace him. The free safety spot will be handled by Leon Fisher or Sharron Washington. Jeff Jacke returns as the Tigers’ placekicker, and Mike Rookstool will be the likely choice at punter, Stull said.
