II - - —iii—M—gUIW— Booth at fair to return assets By Jerry Guenther Senior Reporter Some students attending the Nebraska State Fair may get more for their money than they *A booth operated by the State Treasurer s Department in the Devancy Sports Center is returning unclaimed assets to their righilu owners. , , Cl . Dcena Kurnke, who works in the Male Treasurer’s Deparimcnl and was operating the booth Tuesday morning, said thousands ot Nebraskans have unclaimed assets held by the State Treasurer’s 011 ice. Kurnke said the assets, w hich include aban doned checking and savings accounts, arc turned over to the State Treasurer’s Oil ice il the lawful owner cannot be located and il there has been no activity in the account for seven years. The institutions holding the unclaimed as sets give them to the State Treasurer s Ollicc along with the last known address of the ac count holder, Kumkc said. Besides checking and savings accounts, Kumkc said, many Nebraskans have un claimed insurance benefits, cash dividends, utilities deposits and safely deposit box con tents that arc wailing to be claimed. The State Treasurer’s Office often is fur nished with incorrect addresses or incomplete names, Kumkc said, so it can be difficult locat ing the rightful owner. Since the fair opened Friday, Kumkc esti mates, thousands of people have slopped at the booth. About a dozen have discovered un REGENT from Page 1 those sources arc so confident they’re right, they should identify themselves.” Regent Robert Allen of Hastings said he thinks Warner cannot accept the lacl that the board made a change when it terminated Roskcns because Warner has become a close, personal friend of Roskcns. “He (Warner) is taking it personally,” Al len said. In response to the regents' accusations, Warner said he had expressed reluctance to claimed assets. ‘‘It’s not been dead or boring at all,” she said. The average value of unclaimed assets is about $30 to $40, Kumke said, though some people have claims of more than $2,(XK). If the owners of the unclaimed assets cannot be located, Kumke said, the State Treasurer’s Office invests the money and distributes the interest from the assets to Nebraska school districts. There is no time limit for owners to claim their assets, she said Bill Janccck of Dodge was among those who stopped at the booth Tuesday morning to see if he had any unclaimed assets. “I didn’t have anything,” Janccck said. “All I have is this pair of pants, this shirt and this old cap.” Janccck, a retired mailman, recognized the names ofmany residents in Dodge and Cuming counties who did have unclaimed assets with the Slate Treasurer’s Office. Dawn Koch of Omaha found her mother-in law’s name on the list, but later discovered the claim was paid out. Kumkc said computer errors occasionally include names on the list even after they have been located. “It can be disappointing because they think they may have found something,’’ she said. Terri Wright, a student from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, said she was disap pointed because she didn’t find several thou sand dollars under her name. But she said she thought it was “definitely worth looking.” become involved in the story “on the assump tion that someone would make the exact state ment they did.” “I certainly did not initiate it (the story) at all,’’ Warner said. “1 told the reporter I had heard similar stories.” Warner said the two sources he spoke to were “very reliable.” “There is sometimes a fine line between vote trading and consensus -- ‘You do this and I’ll do that,’” Warner said. “That nevertheless links the issues.” Welcome pardner to The Watering Hole 1321 "O" St. 438-3054 Tuesday Wednesday .25 cold draws Hump Day 1.75 pitchers Sex on the Beach Thursday $1 cl.sloe Sc^ws. 60 draws' ShPPery NlppleS $2.75 pitchers Football Saturdays Dancing 16 O^dmws Select sweaters and shirts... 1/2 off All Leathers...
