fklahoma State coach Jones predicts ebraska will capture conference title I Dart an Fowler lor Reporter Nebraska running back Ken Clark | a weak early schedule arc two sons why Oklahoma Stale football ich Pat Jones tabs the Cornhuskers preseason favorites to capture this ir’s Big Eight title. Nebraska’s four non-conference ncs against Northern Illinois, tit, Minnesota and Oregon State ure the Huskers of momentum ering the conference schedule, “ The pick is Nebraska at this int,’’ Jones said. “They have to be ; favorite. They got four gimmes in ; non-con fere nee schedule. “Whoever has the momentum in i’ non-league schedule has the best lance to emerge in the conference I'C.’’ Jones said Clark, who rushed for a irecr-high 256 yards during Nc aska’s 63-42 against the Cowboys si season, is another reason he fa irs Nebraska. He said he includes Oklahoma ate among four other teams to chal ngc Nebraska. Colorado, Okla >ma and Missouri also are legiti atc contenders, he said. Although Oklahoma State has to splacc its entire offensive line, suc css hinges on the Cowboys’ defense, )ncs said. The Cowboys return eight starters id 19 rettermen from a defense that urrendered 454.5 yards and 29.7 oints per game last season. How good wc arc is going to be based by how good our defense is,” Jones said. He said the offensive line lacks experience. Wc lost a pretty veteran crew,” Jones said, ‘‘but wc think wc can replace those guys athletically and speed-wise.” Oklahoma Stale’s returning de fensive starters include comcrback Mike Clack, free safely Rod Smith, strong salcty Lamar MeGriggs and linebacker Sim Drain. In addition, tackle Brandon Colbert, nose guard Ruben Oliver, defensive end Devin Jones and tackle Stacey Saitcrwhiic also return. On oflcnsc, the Cowboys return 16 iQttcrmcn and three starters, in cluding quarterback Mike Gundy. Gundy needs 617 yards to become the Big Eight’s all-time passing leader. Gundy currently is third behind Kansas State’s Lynn Dickey, who ---- amassed 6,208 career passing yards from 1968 lo 1970, and Kansas’ Frank Scurcr, who passed for 6,410 yards from 1980 to 1983. ‘ ‘Gundy has had a great career and he had a great spring,” Jones said. This is the strongest he’s ever been. He’s improved an awful lot. We think he’s as good as there is.” Also returning offensively arc flanker Jerrod Green and light end Vance Vice. Jones said the Cowboys will not be hard-pressed to replace All-America selections Hart Lee Dykes and Barry Sanders. Sanders rushed lor 2,628 yards and 39 touchdowns last year while starting at running back, while Dykes was Gundy’s top receiving threat at split end. Jones said the Cowboys’ receiving corps is the deepest position on the team. He said junior running backs Gerald Hudson and Vernon Brown arc a talented tandem that will make up for the loss of Sanders.
